Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford F-150 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford F-150 stands out as a pickup that leans hard into luxury without giving up its truck identity. Ford’s F-150 Limited is described as a genuine luxury vehicle in all but name, and it is presented as loaded with extras and tasteful trimmings. That combination gives it a more upscale feel than buyers usually expect from a full-size, light-duty pickup.
What makes it especially appealing is the way those upscale touches are paired with a strong overall reputation. The source calls it arguably the best full-size, light-duty pickup you can buy, which helps explain why it can look like a value despite its high price. At the same time, the price is still a clear consideration, so this is a truck that appeals most to buyers who want premium features and are willing to pay for them.

First off, the waffles color (a beautiful, unique shade) really makes this truck stand out. It turns heads everywhere I go. The leather interior gives it a premium feel, and the sunroof adds an open, airy vibe, especially on sunny drives. This truck is packed with features—from the tech to the comfort, it has everything you could want. Whether it’s advanced infotainment, driver assists, or the luxury finishes, it doesn’t miss. The engine is powerful and responsive, making highway merges and towing feel effortless.

Great value for the vehicle. High mileage but that is not an issue like it used to be.

The truck spent the first 5 years in Michigan. There was new undercoating over the entire bottom of vehicle. In the cracks of the leaf springs and other crevices I could see crusty rust. Didn’t even take it for a drive.

Yes — the 2016 Ford F-150 earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, power, and variety of features, along with the smooth ride and spacious interior. The turbo V6 engines are a recurring favorite, and the truck’s upscale Limited version fits buyers who want premium features in a full-size pickup. That makes it a strong fit if you want a truck that can handle work, family duty, and a more luxurious daily drive.
27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviewers also describe it as comfortable, powerful, and feature-rich, while noting that the turbo V6 engines are especially well liked. The expert evaluation adds that the truck’s reliability is better than average, which supports its reputation for dependable ownership.
Ford’s performance notes also point to a truck that feels composed and confidence-inspiring in daily driving, with stout brakes and responsive steering after some acclimation. The cost-effectiveness notes add that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear, especially on higher-mileage examples that may already be showing maintenance needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?
At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior repair work, since used examples can vary widely in how they were treated. If you’re shopping a higher-trim truck, make sure the equipment you expect is actually present and functioning.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from XL through Limited, and the Limited trim is positioned as the luxury-focused version with upscale materials and a more premium appearance. The base XL is much more work-oriented, so you should expect fewer comfort and convenience features there.
- Powertrain: The truck is offered with a standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and the broader lineup includes two turbocharged V6 engines or a V8 engine. The EcoBoost setup is the standout for power, with strong torque and a confident driving feel.
- Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so you should confirm equipment by trim.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, faster response, improved voice recognition, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is optional, and the system includes Siri compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says this truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 16.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the F-150 lineup. It’s the trim to choose if you care more about capability than luxury.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the premium end of the range.
- Lariat: This is the right step up if you want a more upscale cabin and a stronger luxury feel without going all the way to the top.
- King Ranch: Choose this if you want a distinctive premium truck with a more upscale personality and richer presentation.
- Platinum: This is for buyers who want a near-luxury pickup with a polished, high-end feel.
- Limited: This is the flagship choice, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most luxurious version of the truck and are willing to pay for it.
The safety content notes that Ford offers the truck with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system, but some of these features are not universal across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford F-150?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options but still enough variation to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,362 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,886, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $18,958 sits slightly below last year's $20,235.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well you preserve the truck’s condition and equipment. A well-kept F-150 with desirable features should remain easier to move than a rougher example, especially because shoppers still respond to the model’s broad appeal and strong feature set. Higher-mileage trucks or examples with accident history may face more pressure when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?
The Ford F-150 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 4-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders if the airbags deploy and a paired device is in the vehicle. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. The safety notes also point out that brake support is not the same as automatic emergency braking, and the lane-keeping and forward-collision systems can produce false warnings in some situations.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights the Limited trim as a genuine luxury pickup with tasteful trimmings.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $17,726, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,958 average.
- It introduced aluminum body construction and turbocharged power.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,544, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,958 average.
- It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware and more power.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of luxury, features, and current pricing, the 2016 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value play, while the 2017 makes sense if you specifically want the Raptor-focused upgrade path.
