CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW M4

Summary
With 193 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,034.00, 31.1% of 2016 BMW M4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW M4 5 / 5 stars.
52.8% of 2016 M4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW M4 stands out as a high-performance coupe that blends everyday usability with serious speed. It uses a twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and BMW paired that with rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmissions. The car also brings motorsport-derived hardware such as lightweight suspension and body parts, an Active M Differential, and standard M compound brakes, which help explain why it feels so focused on enthusiastic driving.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is how much performance equipment BMW packed into a car that still came with leather upholstery, climate control, LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The M4’s bodywork is more aggressive than the regular 4 Series, with wider front fenders, flared rear wheel arches, a rear spoiler, and a bulging hood power dome, while coupe versions use a carbon-fiber roof to reduce weight. In 2016, BMW also added the M4 Competition Package as an option, bringing 20-inch alloy wheels, an additional 19 horsepower, uprated springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, black chrome tail pipes, and Shadow Line exterior trim.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2016 BMW M4 is quick, well-equipped, and rewarding to drive, with sharp handling and strong braking among the traits owners praise. It is also practical for a car with such extreme performance, though it is still a premium sports car, so running costs and purchase prices can be significant. The convertible’s small boot is a limitation to keep in mind, but for shoppers who want a focused performance car with a manual transmission option and a strong enthusiast following, the 2016 M4 has a lot going for it.

Very reliable, quick, and stylish. Gets a lot of attention, even from haters, which there are a few. With Xdrive and launch control it catapults from the intersection. Very quiet. Brakes are awesome from high speed (M package). The rear hatch allows for a ton of room. Highly recommend.

| Year-Round High | $48,343.32 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,474 |

If you find a listing below $40,668.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW M4 a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW M4 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its sharp handling, powerful performance, and stylish design. The manual transmission option is another recurring highlight, and many owners also call it a great sports car for the price. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a focused performance car that still works as an everyday driver.
The market also shows 31.3% of listings as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW M4 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially when they value the manual transmission and the overall trouble-free ownership experience they describe. The repeated emphasis on dependable performance and strong braking suggests this is a car many buyers feel they can count on.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about how hard a given example has been driven and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW M4?
At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence that the car was tracked or modified. Because this is a performance model, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW M4?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep bargain conditions across the board.

What is the 2016 BMW M4's resale value?
The current average of $42,390 sits slightly above last year's $41,474.
That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy carefully and keep the car in strong condition. For a future seller, that means a well-kept example with clean history and desirable equipment should remain easier to market than a rough or heavily modified one.
Because prices are already trending up, your best resale position comes from buying a clean car now and avoiding examples with questionable history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW M4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of owner satisfaction, current market support, and enthusiast appeal, the 2016 is a solid year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the cleanest history and best condition at the right price.
