CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 884 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,582, 31.3% of 2016 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
59.6% of 2016 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still puts a premium on performance, even as it leans more toward comfort and refinement than the sharper BMWs of the past. In this generation, BMW offered a range of engines and drivetrains, including rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive on select models, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The lineup also included the 528i, 535i, and 550i, plus the ActiveHybrid 5, giving buyers a broad spread of power and efficiency choices. For shoppers who wanted a more engaging version, the M Sport suspension was a notable draw.
It also brought a useful mix of technology and everyday luxury. BMW added Parking Assist, a 10.2-inch screen, iDrive 6, ventilated front seats, a rear entertainment system, and available active safety features such as adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, and a head-up display. At the same time, the car’s complexity and maintenance demands are part of the tradeoff, and the source notes that the early years of this generation do not have the strongest reliability reputation. Even so, the 2016 BMW 5 Series remains appealing for buyers who want a well-equipped, comfortable sedan with real driving ability and a strong sense of occasion.

The bmw 550i is just plain excellent. I purchased mine about 5 hours away from home so I had a pretty proper test immediately. It’s very powerful and extremely comfortable which is exactly what I want from a luxury vehicle.

How much does the 2016 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,528 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,276.65 |
| Year-Round High | $13,635.65 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,586 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.78% |
Prices have softened 7.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 891 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,276.65, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and broad feature set, and many also highlight the smooth driving experience and available M Sport suspension. For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want a refined midsize luxury sedan that still emphasizes driving feel and offers plenty of technology. 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers repeatedly describe it as powerful, luxurious, and smooth, and those themes often align with a car that owners feel good about keeping. The feedback also points to a model that can feel dependable when it is well maintained and properly sorted. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is still a complex luxury sedan, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs of inconsistent wear, then make sure the car drives cleanly and all major features work as expected. Because this model is technology-rich and complex, you should focus on overall condition and maintenance records rather than price alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 891 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,276.65, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $12,528 sits slightly below last year's $13,586.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and presented. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a segment where buyers pay close attention to condition and features.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $16,969, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,528 average.
- It brings a full redesign with a new chassis and updated technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction. If you're willing to spend more for a newer redesign and updated hardware, the 2017 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize the latest version.
