How much does the 2016 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 7.74% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,274 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety, build quality, comfort, and enjoyable driving experience. The overview also points to a practical side, since it can carry you and three other people while still leaning hard into driver-focused performance.

That makes it a strong fit if you want a used sedan that prioritizes driving enjoyment without giving up everyday usability. The market also shows 34.1% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback highlights the car as safe, well built, and enjoyable to live with, and it also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers. The expert drive notes that BMW’s updates for 2016 improved the steering and suspension, which supports the sense that the car was refined for more confident long-term use.

BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a performance-focused luxury sedan can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on how the car drives, whether the steering feels consistent, and whether the cabin and electronics show signs of heavy use or missing equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3. The lineup spans a wide range of equipment and character, and the base versions are more about core BMW driving feel than luxury extras.
• Powertrain: BMW uses a new lightweight turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine in the 340i, with rear-wheel drive standard, xDrive AWD available, and a 6-speed manual or 8-speed sport automatic. The setup emphasizes strong torque and quick response.
• Safety package: BMW Assist eCall is standard, and the Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors. The Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system.
• Infotainment: iDrive is included, and BMW says the navigation system starts up quicker, calculates routes faster, and can be updated over Wi-Fi. The Technology Package adds navigation, BMW Online, BMW Apps, and a heads-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The 340i returns 20 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg in combined driving, and BMW says the automatic xDrive version can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

Which 2016 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series is offered in 6 trim levels: 320i, 328d, 330e, 330i, 340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 320i: This is the entry point if you want the BMW badge and the core 3 Series driving experience without paying for the more powerful engines or higher-end equipment.
• 328d: Choose this if you want a diesel-flavored option and are prioritizing efficiency-oriented ownership over outright performance.
• 330e: This is the plug-in hybrid choice, so it suits you if you want electrified commuting capability within the 3 Series lineup.
• 330i: This is the best-value pick for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the range and should balance equipment, performance, and price more naturally than the extremes.
• 340i: Pick this if you want the strongest performance character in the lineup; it is the enthusiast’s choice and the trim most aligned with the car’s sports-sedan identity.
• M3: This is the most serious performance model, so it makes sense if you want the most focused version of the 3 Series and are willing to pay for it.

The safety-package trims are worth paying attention to, because the reversing camera is not standard and the more advanced driver-assistance features are bundled into higher packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,274 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.74% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,639, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $11,647 sits slightly below last year's $12,623.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and maintenance history than on broad market momentum.

Because the model still attracts enthusiast interest, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than ordinary sedans. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a Marginal result in the IIHS small overlap frontal impact test, while turning in nearly flawless performance in other crash-test assessments.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW Assist eCall is standard, and the Driver Assistance Package adds a reversing camera and parking sensors. If you want the more advanced driver-assistance tech, the Driver Assistance Plus Package adds forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot information, and a 360-degree camera view system.

The main caveat is that the small-overlap crash result is weaker than the rest of the car’s safety performance, so you should weigh that carefully if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2016 updates improved the steering and suspension, sharpening the car’s driving feel.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $10,327, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,647 average.
• It still delivers the tight, precise chassis and strong engine that define the nameplate.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded used buy, the 2016 is the stronger choice because it combines updated driving dynamics with a still-reasonable market price. If your main goal is to spend less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you can find one in good condition.
