Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX is a well-rounded luxury SUV that excels in safety, comfort, and performance. With a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine and a new 9-speed automatic transmission, it offers a satisfying driving experience, although some drivers have noted issues with the transmission's responsiveness. I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, and overall performance. The expert review also describes the MDX as a vehicle that can be enjoyable to live with over time, and the ownership-cost commentary says it has historically been very reliable. Acura also notes average ownership costs, which helps support the case for long-term use.
That said, the transmission complaints are worth taking seriously on a used example, because drivability issues can become the main ownership headache even when the rest of the SUV holds up well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the transmission behaves smoothly in normal driving. Because this model year is praised for comfort and safety but also criticized for transmission responsiveness, a careful road test matters as much as the paperwork.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup gives you the core MDX experience, but the Technology and Advance packages add important safety and convenience features, while the Entertainment Package adds rear-seat entertainment. The base version also misses the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert that comes with the Technology or Advance Package.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and a new 9-speed automatic transmission. The SH-AWD system is available, and the transmission is tuned for better fuel economy, but the review notes delays, lurching, and less satisfying behavior than the prior setup.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is tied to the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The MDX uses a dual-screen setup, and all models gain Siri Eyes Free compatibility. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and GPS-linked climate control. The Advance Package adds a larger entertainment screen, and the Entertainment Package brings rear-seat entertainment and a 110-volt outlet.
- Fuel efficiency: The SH-AWD model is rated at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance Package and Idle Stop, those figures improve to 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, for 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is presented as a single core model with option packages layered on top, so your decision is less about choosing among many trims and more about choosing the right equipment bundle. If you want the most complete daily-driver setup, the Technology Package is the most compelling step up because it adds navigation, premium audio, and key safety tech. If you want the most comfort and convenience, the Advance Package adds ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, parking sensors, and remote engine start. The Entertainment Package makes the most sense if you regularly carry rear passengers.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version of the MDX, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 948 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,446.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,859 sits slightly below last year's $16,103.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the MDX’s strong reputation for safety, comfort, and family usefulness should help it stay broadly appealing to used shoppers. A well-kept example with clean history and the right equipment should be easier to move later than one with visible wear or unresolved transmission concerns.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
The MDX earns five-star ratings from the federal government in every single assessment, accompanied by a four-star rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it top ratings across the board, plus an Advanced rating for its ability to avoid a frontal-impact collision in the first place.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. If you want blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, you need the Technology or Advance Package, and both of those also include rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model year adds AcuraWatch Plus and a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which are the key year-specific changes to weigh.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with strong safety credentials and you’re willing to inspect carefully for transmission behavior and prior damage, the 2016 MDX is a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on clean-history listings near the low end of the range and compare them against nearby model years to see whether a newer or older MDX gives you a better mix of equipment and condition for the money.
