CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 141 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $17,259, 19.9% of 2015 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
89.4% of 2015 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a truck built for buyers who care more about rugged capability than modern technology. In its final year of production before a complete redesign, it was available as a limited-production TRD Pro trim that enhanced its off-road ability in a Baja-flavored way. That focus gives it a clear identity: it is the kind of Tacoma meant for drivers whose destinations are far off the beaten path.
At the same time, the Tacoma’s age is part of the story. From a technological standpoint, it definitely shows its age, and that can make it feel less current than some shoppers may want. It also may not serve as a versatile family vehicle, so its appeal is narrower than some trucks in the segment. Even so, for buyers who value reliability, a rugged look, and a truck with real off-road talent, the 2015 Toyota Tacoma has a straightforward and appealing purpose.

This truck has a lot of cool features although it's lacking power seats. I would compare it to the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger.

The Gen 2 Tacoma VVI 4.0 L cycl. motor is relatively maintenance free . Change the oil religiously every 5 to 7500 k mi. And you should expect 300,000 plus. Mi.s What the Tacoma lacks in technology and fine durable finishes it makes up in worry free workhorse performance and longevity. And perhaps moreover long-term resale value!

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to reliability, and the expert cost-effectiveness notes describe the Tacoma as a durable machine with strong dependability. That combination suggests you can count on it for long-term use if you buy a well-kept example.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the badge and more about how hard the truck was used, especially if it saw off-road duty or heavy work.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been modified or used off-road. Focus on signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence that the truck’s rugged capability was pushed beyond normal commuting.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TRD Pro adds off-road hardware, including an electronically locking rear differential, hill-start assist control, downhill assist control, bead-lock-style wheels, knobby all-terrain tires, and upgraded suspension; the cabin still feels basic, with lots of cheap gray plastic and no step rails.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 is the engine mentioned here, and the optional TRD supercharger raises output to 295 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque; the tradeoff is noisy operation and thirsty fuel use.
- Safety package: Smart Stop Technology is standard, and the truck also includes six airbags; a reversing camera and downhill assistance control are mentioned as available or equipped on the test truck, but the safety content still points to a fairly limited feature set.
- Infotainment: The standard setup centers on a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a fast-charging USB 2.0 port, while the TRD Pro adds Entune App Suite, a reversing camera, navigation, a JBL premium sound system, voice recognition, satellite radio, traffic and weather reports, and HD Radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck averaged 15.1 mpg, and the cost-effectiveness content also references 18 mpg from the 4.0-liter V6.
Which 2015 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 1 trim level: TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
The TRD Pro: This is the clear choice if you want the most off-road-focused version of the 2015 Tacoma, with upgraded suspension, locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, and extra ground clearance. It suits you best if you care more about trail capability and standout character than comfort, refinement, or modern tech. The safety content still points to a limited feature set, so you should not expect a big leap in driver-assistance equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,480 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,440, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $20,769 sits slightly below last year's $20,930.
That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually means the truck is holding value in a predictable way, which can make timing less stressful.
The Tacoma’s reputation for durability and strong owner satisfaction should continue to support demand when you decide to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma earns Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it has not been tested for small overlap frontal-impact protection. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a three-star rating for front passenger frontal-impact protection and a four-star rollover resistance rating for the standard 4WD Double Cab.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content points to Smart Stop Technology as the named safety feature, along with six standard airbags. A reversing camera is mentioned as optional, and downhill assistance control appears on the test truck, but the overall safety picture still looks limited by modern standards.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It offers a final-year TRD Pro with serious off-road hardware and a clear Baja-style focus.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,148, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,769 average.
- It brings a full redesign and broader configuration flexibility.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and the distinctive final-year TRD Pro character, the 2015 makes sense. If you’d rather pay more for the redesigned truck and a more modern overall package, the 2016 is the better long-term path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2015.
