Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to strong reliability, and owners also describe it as dependable and long-lasting. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing its rugged construction and ability to handle demanding terrain without complaint. You should still expect the usual used-SUV ownership risks, so a careful inspection matters if you want that reliability to carry forward.

What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?

At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on any truck that has seen off-road use. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, tire condition, and signs of hard use underneath the vehicle. If you’re shopping a 4Runner for its ruggedness, make sure the example you choose still feels tight and well cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, crawl control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and Safety Connect. The Trail is the most capability-focused choice, while the Limited is the most comfort-oriented.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift when you want extra passing power. The 4WD-equipped versions are the ones that best match the 4Runner’s rugged mission.
• Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist Control. Models with 4WD also get Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds Safety Connect, but the model is missing some of the latest active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The Limited gets a larger 7-inch screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation says combined fuel economy is 18 mpg, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.

Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, but the rear-wheel-drive setup undercuts the 4Runner’s core appeal. It makes sense only if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and are willing to add the right equipment.
• Trail: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, crawl control, and Downhill Assist Control. If you want the 4Runner for real trail use, this is the one to target.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road-focused version, with TRD Bilstein shocks, rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD aluminum front skid plate, matte-black 17-inch wheels, and beefy off-road tires. It suits you if you want the most aggressive hardware and don’t mind paying for it.
• Limited: This is the comfort and convenience choice, with leather, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, JBL audio, keyless entry, push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. It’s the right pick if you care more about daily comfort than trail hardware.

The Trail is the best all-around buy if you want capability without going all the way to the TRD Pro. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,089 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.19% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,379, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $21,790 sits slightly below last year's $22,278.

That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle, but it also means future resale gains may be more modest than they were a year ago. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and its strong owner satisfaction should help it stay in demand with shoppers who want a rugged SUV. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with a standard reversing camera, Hill Start Assist Control, and, on 4WD models, Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Toyota also reserves Safety Connect for the Limited trim. The safety evaluation notes limited active-safety content overall, and the model’s crash-test and rollover-resistance performance are a concern if safety is a top priority for you.

Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The TRD Pro adds serious off-road hardware and excels on rough terrain.

Consider the 2014 if:

• At $20,183, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,790 average.
• It keeps the traditional body-on-frame SUV formula while balancing rugged capability with comfortable daily driving.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,940, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,790 average.
• It adds cell-phone navigation and more towing capacity while keeping the same rugged character.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, owner satisfaction, and current market value, the 2015 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can save you money while preserving the 4Runner’s core strengths. If you want a newer carryover with a few useful upgrades and don’t mind paying more, the 2016 is the better alternative.
