CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 62 currently listed for sale near Sacramento, CA and an average price of $26,762.00, 12.9% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
80.6% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility over everyday polish. In expert testing, it was described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and as excelling on rock-strewn paths. It was also praised for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need a vehicle that can handle gear as well as rough terrain.
That capability comes with tradeoffs, though. The same test-drive summary noted that it makes too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and the broader impression is that its strengths are tied closely to its adventurous mission. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from experts point to a vehicle that fits a very specific mission well. The 4Runner is aimed at drivers who want rugged utility, off-road ability, and space for gear rather than a polished daily commuter.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, and they also like the rear window that opens like a regular window. The overview and test-drive notes reinforce that it’s especially appealing if you value hard-core off-road capability and cargo-hauling usefulness.
That said, the market still shows 26.8% of listings as good or great deals, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to strong reliability, and it also describes the 4Runner as dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over time. The expert notes add that Toyota includes free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
The broader takeaway for used buyers is that this is the kind of SUV that can make sense for long-term ownership if you prioritize durability, but you should still verify maintenance history and overall condition before buying.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or heavy family duty. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, and signs that the SUV has been used hard rather than just driven a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 is the entry point and comes with rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, crawl control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited leans more toward comfort with leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift when you want more passing power. The 4WD-equipped versions add traction-focused hardware that suits rough terrain better than everyday commuting.
- Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera, Hill Start Assist Control, and 4WD models add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and blind-spot monitoring is not part of the setup.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, upgraded stereo speakers, and Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity. The Limited gets a larger 7-inch screen, while the system’s small buttons can be distracting.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test-drive notes cite 18 mpg in combined driving as the EPA figure, with a real-world result of 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the starting point, but the rear-wheel-drive setup makes it the least compelling choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability. It makes sense mainly if you want the nameplate at the lowest entry point and plan to add equipment carefully.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim for buyers who want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware without stepping all the way up to the top end. Standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, crawl control, Multi-terrain Select, and Downhill Assist Control make it the most purpose-built choice for trail use.
- TRD Pro: This is the most aggressive off-road version, with TRD Bilstein shocks, rear remote reservoirs, TRD front springs, a TRD aluminum skid plate, and off-road tires. It suits you if you want the most specialized hardware and don’t mind giving up some everyday polish.
- Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with leather, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, JBL audio, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. It’s the pick if you want the most upscale 4Runner experience rather than the most trail-focused one.
Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and the rest of the lineup does not get that service.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,030 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,397.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,957 sits slightly below last year's $22,427.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale performance will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
The 4Runner’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for reliability should help support demand over time, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner’s safety content also notes that it lacks many of the latest active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, and it reserves Safety Connect for the Limited trim. The expert commentary is especially cautious about its rollover tendency because of the high center of gravity, so you should treat safety equipment and driving habits as important parts of the ownership equation.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s a rugged, cargo-friendly SUV built for hard-core off-road use.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,710, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,957 average.
- It blends ruggedness with everyday usability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,375, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,957 average.
- It adds useful updates like cell-phone navigation and more towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the most compelling mix of price, availability, and proven ruggedness, the 2015 is the one to target. If you’re shopping strictly on price, the 2014 is the cheaper path; if you want a few useful upgrades and can spend more, the 2016 is worth a look.
