CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 84 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $22,562, 16.7% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
78.6% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility. In the expert test drive summary, the 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is described as being built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts, and it excels at conquering rock-strewn paths. It is also noted for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need capability and cargo space more than everyday polish.
That same assessment also makes clear where the 2015 Toyota 4Runner asks for compromise. It is described as having too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, so it is not presented as an ideal family vehicle. Owner feedback reinforces the truck’s practical side, with praise for its smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

How much does the 2015 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,886 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,393 |
| Year-Round High | $22,590 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,566 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.01% |
Prices have softened 3.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,067 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — the 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns 4.43/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from expert testing. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability, and they also value the off-road capability and practical rear window. In context, that lines up with this year’s focus on rugged utility and cargo-carrying ability rather than everyday polish. Even so, the market shows 32.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to strong reliability, and owners also describe it as dependable and trouble-free over time. The expert assessment reinforces that impression by calling out impressive reliability ratings and noting that the 4Runner is a great value for people who need an SUV that can go places other vehicles can’t. Toyota also includes free maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about living with an SUV that asks for compromises in fuel use and daily comfort.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a truck that may have seen trail use or hard towing. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, suspension condition, and signs of uneven tire wear or repair work. If you want one for family duty, pay close attention to visibility, seating access, and how well the cabin fits your routine.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 is the simplest version and comes with rear-wheel drive, while the Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable driving modes, crawl control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited leans more toward comfort with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect, while the TRD Pro adds off-road hardware such as Bilstein shocks, TRD front springs, a front skid plate, and off-road tires.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It feels adequate, but it is not especially quick, and the transmission can be slow to downshift when you want more passing power.
- Safety package: Every 4Runner gets a reversing camera, Hill Start Assist Control, and 4WD models add Active Traction Control and Downhill Assist Control. Toyota’s Safety Connect service is reserved for the Limited, so lower trims miss that feature.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The larger 7-inch screen is exclusive to the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive notes 18 mpg in combined driving, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra trail hardware or luxury features. It is the least expensive path into the lineup, but you give up the more advanced off-road equipment and the richer cabin upgrades found higher up.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s off-road personality to feel fully realized. It adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, crawl control, selectable terrain modes, and Downhill Assist Control, plus exclusive KDSS availability for better articulation.
- TRD Pro: This is the one to choose if you want the most aggressive off-road setup and the toughest-looking hardware. It combines the Trail’s drivetrain upgrades with TRD Bilstein shocks, TRD springs, a skid plate, and off-road tires.
- Limited: This is the trim for you if comfort and convenience matter more than trail focus. It adds leather, ventilation, dual-zone climate control, a premium JBL audio system, parking sensors, and Safety Connect, but its 20-inch wheels are less ideal once pavement ends.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited, so that trim has the clearest safety-package advantage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,067 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,393, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $21,886 sits slightly below last year's $22,566.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, the recent decline means you should not expect a quick appreciation story, but the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility still supports demand. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should have a better shot at holding value than with many mainstream SUVs.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner earns a three-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Marginal result from IIHS.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard reversing camera is helpful, but the 4Runner otherwise offers few of the latest active safety features. Toyota reserves Safety Connect for the Limited, so lower trims miss that added emergency-assistance service. The expert assessment also flags the SUV’s high center of gravity and rollover concern, which is a meaningful caveat if you plan to drive it in mixed traffic or with family aboard.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 stands out for hard-core off-road ability and cargo-hauling utility.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,404, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $21,886 average.
- It blends comfortable daily driving with true off-road capability.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,310, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $21,886 average.
- It adds cell-phone navigation and higher towing capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price and capability, the 2015 is the sensible middle ground. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2014 is the cheaper route into the same rugged formula. If you want a bit more practicality and can spend more, the 2016 is worth a look.
