CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 88 currently listed for sale near Indianapolis, IN and an average price of $18,991.00, 18.2% of 2015 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.43 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
69.3% of 2015 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged SUV aimed squarely at drivers who value off-road ability and utility over everyday polish. In expert testing, it was described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and as excelling on rock-strewn paths. It was also praised for carrying lots of stuff, which adds to its appeal for buyers who need a vehicle that can handle gear as well as rough terrain.
That capability comes with tradeoffs, though. The same test-drive summary noted that it makes too many compromises to serve well as a day-to-day runabout for ferrying little kids, and the broader impression is that its strengths are tied closely to its adventurous mission. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to a smooth ride, comfortable seating, strong reliability, and the rear window that opens like a regular window, while also noting that it is not the most fuel-efficient choice in its class.

Horrible shaking steering wheel, leather wants to tear, no space, terrible gas mileage.

I absolutely love the feel of the vehicle, the seats are very comfortable in front and back. The front seat feels snug which makes me feel safer while driving and the technology is top notch. The backup camera is very useful and overall the vehicle is a very smooth drive offering great off road capabilities

I’m so happy with my 4Runner it’s the perfect size, a comfortable ride, easy to park and I feel is quite comparable to my Tahoe I had before it. It’s better on gas and I like the more reliable name.

Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — 4.43/5 from owners points to strong satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, comfortable seating, and strong reliability. The off-road capability also stands out, along with practical touches like the rear window that opens like a regular window. In use-case terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a rugged SUV that can handle adventure duty and still feel comfortable enough for everyday driving. With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also emphasizes strong reliability, and the expert notes reinforce that this is a vehicle built for durability and hard use. Toyota’s maintenance coverage for the first two years or 25,000 miles adds a helpful ownership perk early on.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about how previous use, mileage, and maintenance history may have affected a rugged SUV that’s often driven hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use or heavy commuting. Pay close attention to signs of wear in the suspension, tires, brakes, and interior controls, since those areas can reveal how the SUV was used and maintained. If you’re comparing listings, focus on condition first and equipment second.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 is rear-wheel drive, which undercuts the point of buying this SUV for many shoppers. The Trail adds standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, selectable terrain modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control. The Limited adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and Safety Connect. The SR5’s optional Premium Package adds an upgraded infotainment system with a high-resolution screen, navigation, premium sound, Entune App Suite smartphone integration, SofTex upholstery, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and a power sunroof.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It feels adequate, but the 5-speed automatic can be slow to downshift, and fuel economy is weak at around 18 mpg combined.
- Safety package: A standard reversing camera is included, but the 4Runner lacks many modern active safety features. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, and blind-spot monitoring is not mentioned.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, upgraded speakers, Entune App Suite smartphone connectivity, predictive traffic and weather, and a USB 2.0 port. The Limited gets a larger 7-inch screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the 4Runner averages around 18 mpg combined, and real-world testing returned 16.8 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 4 trim levels: SR5, Trail, TRD Pro and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is rear-wheel drive, so it misses the standard 4WD hardware many shoppers expect from a 4Runner. If you want the most basic version, make sure you’re comfortable giving up some of the model’s core capability.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Trail is the best value if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware without jumping to the top end. Standard 4WD, a locking rear differential, terrain modes, Crawl Control, and Downhill Assist Control make it the most compelling all-around choice for capability.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most comfort-focused choice, with ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, JBL audio, keyless entry with push-button start, parking sensors, and Safety Connect. It’s the trim to choose if you want the most upscale daily-driver experience.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the most specialized option, with Bilstein shocks, TRD springs, a front skid plate, and off-road tires. It’s the right pick if you want maximum trail hardware, but it’s more specialized than most daily drivers need.
Safety Connect is available only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,038 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,394.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $22,043 sits slightly below last year's $22,946.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means your return will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples should still benefit from steady demand among shoppers who want a rugged SUV with strong owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The 4Runner offers few of the latest active safety features beyond a standard reversing camera, and the high center of gravity makes rollover concerns more relevant than in many rivals. Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited, so lower trims miss that added emergency-assistance feature. For used buyers, that means you should weigh the SUV’s rugged strengths against its limited safety tech and be especially careful about how the vehicle has been driven and maintained.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends rugged off-road capability with a spacious interior and strong reliability.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $20,806, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $22,043 average.
- It emphasizes traditional SUV durability and broad everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,504, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $22,043 average.
- It adds more praise for comfort, towing, and strong resale appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, inventory, and proven capability, the 2015 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can save you money while keeping the same rugged formula. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer example, the 2016 is worth a look.
