Summary
With 1,353 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,136.00, 33.0% of 2015 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Outback 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out by combining the utility buyers expect from a crossover SUV with a level of capability that can be hard to match in a wide range of driving situations. It was redesigned for 2015, and that update made it bigger and better than before while still keeping the package practical rather than cumbersome.
One of its defining traits is standard all-wheel drive, which gives it broad appeal for drivers who want extra confidence without giving up fuel economy. That balance is a major part of the Outback’s charm: it offers more than just everyday usefulness, yet it does so in a way that does not penalize buyers at the pump. Owners also tend to appreciate its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, and ample cargo space. A possible drawback is that some shoppers may miss built-in navigation, but for many buyers the Outback’s mix of capability, comfort, and efficiency is the bigger story.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 3.6R Limited on Jul 4, 2025
My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.

2015 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2015 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2015 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,168 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,625.40 |
| Year-Round High | $11,851.03 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,818 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.50% |
Prices have softened 5.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,346 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and conditions. If you find a listing below $10,625.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2015 Subaru Outback earns a 4.86/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its solid ride, luxurious feel, and impressive safety features. They also like the ample cargo space and fuel efficiency, especially with the all-wheel drive system. In practical terms, that lines up well with an Outback that’s aimed at families and outdoor-minded shoppers who want versatility without giving up everyday comfort.
With 29.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still a meaningful amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, reliable, and well suited to long-term ownership. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Outback offers a package that doesn’t penalize buyers in terms of fuel economy, which supports its appeal as a practical daily driver. Subaru’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to strong value retention over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s safety systems and electronics work as intended. Because this model is often chosen for family use and all-weather driving, you’ll also want to pay close attention to signs of heavy wear inside and out.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars, but it lacks the added comfort and safety equipment found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 175 hp through a CVT and all-wheel drive, with decent low-speed response but weaker mid-range passing power; a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder is also available.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to warn you about danger and can brake the car to a full stop if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, but those features are not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, app access, and CD playback, while the available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with swipe and pinch controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert drive returned 23.7 mpg, compared with an EPA combined rating of 28 mpg.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5i is the value play if you want the core Outback formula, but it skips the upgraded wheels, heated seats, and advanced safety tech found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.5i Premium adds alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control, making it the best balance of comfort and price.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5i Limited brings the most everyday luxury and safety upgrades, including a power liftgate, heated rear seats, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist.
- Off-road trim: The 3.6R Limited is the choice if you want stronger acceleration, but the larger engine comes with less efficiency for typical daily driving.
EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trims, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium but standard on Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,346 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,625.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $11,168 sits slightly below last year's $11,818.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. Even so, the Outback’s broad appeal, strong utility, and steady owner satisfaction help support demand. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it well, it should remain attractive to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2015 Subaru Outback gets a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the key driver-assistance suite here, and it uses two cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake automatically if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, though some of those features are trim-dependent. Subaru also builds the Outback around a ring-shaped reinforcement frame designed to manage crash energy.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2015, it’s bigger and better than before without hurting fuel economy.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,702, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,168 average.
- It adds a more polished cabin and advanced safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, inventory, and proven owner satisfaction, the 2015 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a slightly more refined package, the 2016 is the better upgrade path; price-sensitive shoppers should stay focused on the 2015.
