CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 2,372 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,327, 31.4% of 2015 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Forester 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
63.9% of 2015 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Forester stands out as a crossover that puts value and safety ahead of flash. It earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it was also named Best Value. The expert test drive data describes it as a strong choice for buyers who do not care about the latest tech or the most luxurious interior, which helps define its appeal: it is practical, well-regarded, and easy to recommend for shoppers focused on substance.
It also benefits from being fresh off a 2014 redesign, which had already drawn praise. Motor Trend named it SUV of the Year, and the test-drive summary says that after a week in a 2.5i Premium trim, the reviewer understood the enthusiasm a little better. Owner feedback reinforces the Forester’s reputation for smooth handling, a spacious interior, comfort, safety features, fuel efficiency, and practicality, while also noting concerns about reliability and an infotainment system that can feel outdated.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i Limited on Jun 11, 2014
After 10 years with my old car, I have been checking out what's on the market. I hadn't considered a Subaru until someone suggested how much their friend liked their new Forester. So, not expecting much, I test drove one, three times so far. I was very favorably impressed. For a SUV, handling was quite nimble but was still comfortable over rough roads, railroad tracks and the like, while remaining solid and quiet. The base 2.5i engine was more than adequate for my needs. The interior is very spacious and the visibility great. The front seats could be a little better, but that can be said about most of the small SUVs on the market, and the overall design and infotainment systems are a bit out of date, but I can forgive that since I value the driving aspects of the car more. Overall, it is a great value for the money, even at the higher trim levels. It's my choice when I trade cars later this summer.

I loved my 2015 Subaru Forester ! It was comfortable and we went everywhere in it. No mountain too tall. Unfortunately it was totaled. We were not hurt due to its safety features. I’m looking for another and possibly a 2016.

I drove several models, but the Subaru Forester had plenty of pep, and was a very smooth operating vehicle. I compared it to the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue. Feature for feature the Forester is the best value for my dollar.

| Year-Round High | $11,468 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,421 |

Is the 2015 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Forester for its smooth handling, spacious interior, comfort, fuel efficiency, and practicality. That makes it especially appealing if you want a crossover that prioritizes everyday usefulness over flash, and the overview frames it as a value-focused, safety-minded choice for shoppers who care more about substance than the latest tech or a luxury cabin.
32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on practicality, comfort, and the kind of long-term usefulness that makes a crossover easy to live with. The expert drive notes that it works well as a reliable family and grocery hauler, and the cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces Subaru’s strong ownership reputation.
The main used-buyer risk is that some listings may hide wear or maintenance history, so you should verify condition carefully before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. After that, focus on how the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment function in real-world use, since those are the areas that most affect day-to-day ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup is practical and safety-focused, but the Premium example shows how added packages can bring more convenience and driver-assistance equipment.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT, while the turbocharged 2.0XT adds much more power.
- Safety package: EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warnings, and pre-collision throttle management; it is camera-based and can disengage in low-visibility conditions.
- Infotainment: The standard display is 4.3 inches, and the optional navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT is rated at 24 mpg city and 32 highway, while the 6-speed manages 22/29; the turbocharged model is rated at 23/28.
Which 2015 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Forester is offered in 2 trim levels: 2.5i and 2.5i Premium.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the straightforward choice if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest entry point, including the standard safety equipment and the practical all-wheel-drive setup.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the better-value pick if you want a more complete daily driver, since the expert drive was done in this trim and it pairs the Forester’s usefulness with more comfort and available package content.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that EyeSight adds important driver-assistance features, but it is not standard on every listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,359 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,885, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,345 sits slightly below last year's $11,421.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern usually means buyers are still comfortable with the model’s value proposition, even if they are not bidding prices up aggressively.
For you, that means a well-kept Forester should remain relatively easy to price competitively. Strong demand for practical, safety-oriented crossovers can help support resale, especially when the vehicle has a clean history and solid maintenance records.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2015 Subaru Forester earns an IIHS Top Pick rating and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with only front impacts getting a four-star score.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes symmetrical all-wheel drive, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a strong airbag lineup with front pelvis/torso, side-curtain, and driver’s knee airbags. EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management, and the braking system earned a Superior rating from IIHS.
One caveat is that EyeSight is camera-based, so low-visibility conditions can cause it to disengage.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs strong safety with practical value and a fresh post-redesign feel.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $10,036, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $11,345 average.
- It emphasizes all-weather confidence and practical versatility.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,736, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,345 average.
- It adds a new touchscreen interface and broader all-around appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and everyday usefulness, the 2015 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 can save you money, while the 2016 makes sense if you want the newer interface and are willing to pay more.
