Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Forester stands out as a crossover that puts value and safety ahead of flash. It earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the expert test drive data also notes that it was named SUV of the Year by Motor Trend. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a practical, well-regarded compact SUV without chasing the newest technology or the most luxurious cabin.
It is also described as fresh off a 2014 redesign, which helps explain why it still felt current enough to impress reviewers. The test-drive summary says that after a week in a 2.5i Premium trim, the reviewer understood the enthusiasm around it a little better. Owner feedback reinforces the Forester’s appeal by pointing to its smooth handling, spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and overall practicality. At the same time, some owners have raised concerns about reliability and the infotainment system, which fits the broader impression of a vehicle that prioritizes usefulness over polish.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i Limited on Jun 11, 2014
After 10 years with my old car, I have been checking out what's on the market. I hadn't considered a Subaru until someone suggested how much their friend liked their new Forester. So, not expecting much, I test drove one, three times so far. I was very favorably impressed. For a SUV, handling was quite nimble but was still comfortable over rough roads, railroad tracks and the like, while remaining solid and quiet. The base 2.5i engine was more than adequate for my needs. The interior is very spacious and the visibility great. The front seats could be a little better, but that can be said about most of the small SUVs on the market, and the overall design and infotainment systems are a bit out of date, but I can forgive that since I value the driving aspects of the car more. Overall, it is a great value for the money, even at the higher trim levels. It's my choice when I trade cars later this summer.

I loved my 2015 Subaru Forester ! It was comfortable and we went everywhere in it. No mountain too tall. Unfortunately it was totaled. We were not hurt due to its safety features. I’m looking for another and possibly a 2016.

I drove several models, but the Subaru Forester had plenty of pep, and was a very smooth operating vehicle. I compared it to the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue. Feature for feature the Forester is the best value for my dollar.

There are 2,339 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $10,894.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its smooth handling, spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and practicality. The overview also frames it as a value-forward compact SUV that emphasizes safety and usefulness over flash or luxury. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical crossover that feels easy to live with rather than especially upscale.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable, practical, and trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, especially those who value its long-term usefulness and everyday livability.
The expert test-drive notes describe it as a good balance for a reliable family and grocery hauler. The cost-effectiveness commentary also highlights Subaru’s strong resale reputation and low cost to own.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may carry the reliability concerns owners have raised, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
At 63.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the safety systems or infotainment have been repaired or replaced. Because this model year is safety-focused but not especially polished inside, condition matters a lot more than cosmetic presentation.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes standard safety equipment and all-wheel drive, but the cabin and infotainment are described as below par, so higher trims are more appealing if you want a better-equipped daily driver.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT in lower trims, while the turbocharged 2.0XT brings more power. The CVT returns 24 mpg city/32 highway, the manual 22/29, and the turbo is rated at 23/28.
- Safety package: EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management. It is camera-based, so low-visibility conditions can cause it to disengage.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 4.3 inches, and the optional navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen. The system is criticized for lag and poor resolution.
- Fuel efficiency: The base CVT returns 24 mpg city/32 highway, the manual 22/29, and the turbocharged version is rated at 23/28.
Which 2015 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Forester is offered in 1 trim level: 2.5i Premium.
Here's the short version:
The 2.5i Premium is the most relevant choice here because the test-drive data centers on it and it adds the kind of equipment that makes the Forester easier to live with day to day. It still keeps the model’s core strengths — safety, space, and practicality — while avoiding the weakest parts of the cabin experience as much as possible.
The EyeSight package is worth seeking out if you want the added driver-assistance features, but you should know that its camera-based setup can disengage in low-visibility conditions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,339 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,894.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,274 sits slightly below last year's $11,613.
That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively now, but it also suggests future sellers may need to stay competitive on asking price. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should be better positioned when it is time to resell. The model’s practical reputation and owner satisfaction help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star front-impact ratings.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety package includes symmetrical all-wheel drive, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and multiple airbags, including front pelvis/torso, side-curtain, and driver’s knee airbags. EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure and sway warnings, and pre-collision throttle management. The main caveat is that the camera-based system can disengage in fog, snow, rain, or bright sunlight.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs a fresh redesign with strong safety and practical everyday usability.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $9,886, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $11,274 average.
- It emphasizes all-weather confidence and a loyal, familiar Subaru formula.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,948, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,274 average.
- It adds a new touchscreen interface and keeps the Forester competitive across space, safety, and manners.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and everyday usefulness, the 2015 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2014 is the value play; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2016 is the upgrade path.
