CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 2,805 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,350, 29.9% of 2015 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Ford Explorer 4.41 / 5 stars.
61.3% of 2015 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Ford Explorer stands out as a family-oriented midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond the Explorer’s original truck-based roots. By this point, it was part of the fifth generation, which turned the model into a crossover-style vehicle and gave it a more car-like character than earlier Explorers. That shift helped make it more approachable for everyday use, while still leaving it with the roomy, versatile personality that has long defined the nameplate.
For 2015, the Explorer offered a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and buyers could also get a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that helped raise combined fuel economy to 23 mpg, though only in front-wheel drive form. It also had available all-wheel drive, and AWD versions included hill descent control, hill descent assist, and a terrain mode system with four different settings. Inside, Ford had already brought modern infotainment to the Explorer, and buyers could add heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxuries. That mix of space, features, and available traction hardware made it appealing to shoppers who wanted a practical SUV that could still feel fairly well equipped.
The 2015 Explorer was not without drawbacks. The source notes that this generation had a worse reliability record than its newer-school rivals, and that 2011 through 2013 models were especially problematic, which helps explain why later years are generally the ones to seek out. It also wasn’t the most efficient or the most luxurious choice in its class. Even so, it remained a competitive and familiar option for buyers who wanted a useful three-row SUV with decent towing ability, broad availability, and enough comfort features to make daily driving easier.

Good vehicle for a growing family. The XLT may not be as flashy as the Limited or as fast as the Sport, but itll get you from A to B. Very comfortable and it has tons of room.

How much does the 2015 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,392 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,398.23 |
| Year-Round High | $11,386.94 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,391 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.77% |
Prices have softened 8.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,818 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $10,398.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Ford Explorer a good car?
Generally — the 4.41/5 user rating points to a well-liked SUV for shoppers who want family-friendly space and everyday usability. Drivers commonly praise its comfort, spaciousness, performance, stylish look, and technology. The main tradeoff is fuel economy, which several owners describe as poor, so it fits you best if room, versatility, and driveability matter more than efficiency. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.41/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with owners highlighting comfort, driveability, and features they can count on. That said, the broader ownership picture still calls for caution, since this generation has a mixed reputation and you should expect used-car wear to vary by maintenance history.
For used buyers, the long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about how well each individual example has been cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Ford Explorer?
At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage listings or vehicles with incomplete service records. Focus your evaluation on overall condition, signs of past repairs, and whether the SUV still feels tight, quiet, and well maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Ford Explorer?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently while still finding worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,818 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,398.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $10,392 sits slightly below last year's $11,391.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is documented. If you keep the SUV clean, maintained, and accident-free, you give yourself a better chance of standing out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2015 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,121, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,392 average.
- It adds a refreshed look, a more efficient engine option, and a new Platinum trim.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2015 if you want the lower entry price and are willing to shop carefully for condition. If you want a more updated version and can stretch your budget, the 2016 is the better upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2015 makes the stronger value case as long as you verify history and inspect the vehicle closely.
