CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 5,219 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,752, 30.9% of 2017 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Explorer 4.8 / 5 stars.
64.8% of 2017 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that blends everyday comfort with a more engaging driving character than many buyers expect. In the fifth generation, Ford moved the Explorer onto a D4 platform and gave it a front-wheel-drive-based layout with all-wheel drive available, turning it into a family-friendly crossover. That change also brought a more car-like feel, and the model’s later-year reputation is helped by the fact that Ford refreshed its styling and in-car tech in 2017.
It also offers a broad spread of powertrains and equipment. The Explorer could be had with a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 in 2011, and later fifth-generation models added a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.5-liter Duratec V6, and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. Safety and convenience features were a strong part of the package too, with available BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. Buyers also got modern infotainment systems, including Ford’s SYNC system, and the cabin could be equipped with heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
For shoppers, the appeal is that the 2017 Ford Explorer is one of the more complete versions of this generation: it has useful space, available all-wheel drive, and enough available technology to feel well equipped. At the same time, it is not the class leader in every area. The source notes that the fifth-generation Explorer rarely ranked at the top of its class, and that rivals were more efficient, more reliable, more spacious, or more luxurious depending on the comparison. It also has an average or below-average reliability record overall, so a careful test drive is still a smart idea.

How much does the 2017 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,762 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,742.23 |
| Year-Round High | $14,849.13 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,854 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.35% |
Prices have softened 7.35% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,243 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $13,742.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Ford Explorer earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and impressive features, and many also like its power and handling, especially with the EcoBoost engine. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a roomy three-row SUV with family-friendly comfort and useful capability. 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers repeatedly calling out the smooth ride and the sense that the vehicle delivers well over time. The same feedback also points to a trouble-free-feeling combination of comfort and capability for many owners. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition can vary widely, so you should pay close attention to maintenance history and wear items.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or lower-priced listings. Focus your condition check on signs of past repairs, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any interior or electronic issues that could affect long-term ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value if you compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,243 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,742.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $13,762 sits slightly below last year's $14,854.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the best protection is choosing a well-kept example with strong history and broad appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,121, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,762 average.
- Ford refreshed it with updated styling, more features, and a new Platinum trim.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and available inventory. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better value play, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
