2015 BMW i3 test drive
overall
The BMW i3 is an interesting proof-of-concept for the automaker that battery-first tech has a future in the rest of its lineup.
The small, lumpy i3 hatchback may not look like a BMW underneath all of its badges and grilles, but it does have enough tech to make up for it. A carbon fiber and aluminum body, and lightweight materials inside, help a 22kWh battery power the i3 for 80 miles on electricity alone—when fitted with an optional "range extending" gas-powered generator, twice that. Its $42,400 entry price isn't for the squeamish, but the "gee-whiz" tech helps make up for that.

It has nearly all the features I am looking for but two. I would like the bigger battery pack and I do not think the Rex system is needed for my use case.

Great car for graceful people who don't have to travel very far on a single charge. I knocked heads with the passenger as we buckled up (I'm under 5' tall, so this was a width/coordination problem). The backseat is incredibly small with no windows, which was a no-go for my kid. The car was adorable and super fun to drive, though. If I were single and childless I would have bought it.

This is a high end version with driver and parking assist, leather interior and bigger display screens. The wood dash adds to a beautiful contrast with the brown seating. It was a great deal. Accepting the relatively short driving range will be OK once I use it for commuting. Long distance travel (drive it home over 300 miles) is challenging even with the clever extended range feature. It is a work of art and technology!

Car drives smoothly with good acceleration. Not a lot of cargo space, but would be perfect for a couple or a family with a child. If you are a minimalist, this car would work fantastic for you, car is quirky but quirky is better than sitting on the roadside because you cant afford gas.

How much does the 2015 BMW i3 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,745 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,393 |
| Year-Round High | $8,980 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $8,904 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.78% |
Prices have softened 1.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 97 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 a good car?
Yes — the 2015 BMW i3 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, stylish interior, and fun driving experience. The user feedback also highlights the quirky design and the convenience of electric driving, especially for commuting. In practical terms, that makes the i3 a strong fit if you want a distinctive city-friendly EV with a tech-forward personality rather than a conventional all-purpose hatchback.
Good and great deals account for 13.4% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels smooth, enjoyable, and convenient for everyday electric driving, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable commuter. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the i3’s unusual but well-integrated engineering, including its carbon fiber and aluminum construction and its battery-first design. BMW also notes that the car uses a LifeDrive structure to help protect the passenger cabin in a crash.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the i3’s limited range and compact packaging can make it less forgiving if your needs grow beyond short-trip use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW i3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery-related condition, charging behavior, and any signs of wear from urban use. You should also pay close attention to cargo space, rear-seat comfort, and whether the car’s range fits your daily routine.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The i3 comes in three trims or “Worlds” — Mega, Giga, and Tera. The Mega uses 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric, the Giga adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, and the Tera adds a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. The top two trims can also be fitted with optional 20-inch tires.
- Powertrain: You get a 170-hp all-electric rear-wheel-drive setup with a single-speed transmission. An optional 34-hp range-extending 2-cylinder engine acts only as a generator, and the car can run roughly 80 miles on electricity alone.
- Infotainment: The optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen is clear and easy to use, and the car uses BMW’s iDrive system. A Technology + Driving Assistance Package adds the high-def screen and real-time traffic info.
- Fuel efficiency: The i3 is rated at 117 mpge on electricity alone and 39 mpg when using the range extender on premium fuel.
Which 2015 BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW i3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Mega, Giga, and Tera.
Here's the short version:
- Mega: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core i3 experience with 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and care more about the car’s design and electric character than upscale materials.
- Giga: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash without moving all the way to the top of the range. If you want the i3’s premium feel without stretching too far, this is the trim to focus on.
- Tera: This is the most upscale version, with a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. Choose it if you want the most luxurious cabin presentation and are willing to pay for the extra finish.
Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW i3?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 13.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 97 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,393, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 BMW i3's resale value?
The current average of $8,745 sits slightly below last year's $8,904.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, it also means the car may be easier to buy at a reasonable entry point than it was a year ago. For a future seller, the key question is whether the i3’s niche appeal and premium-tech identity continue to support demand in your local market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
According to the manufacturer, the i3 uses a LifeDrive construction to compartmentalize and protect the passenger cabin in a crash. Carbon fiber composites were used to reinforce collision areas, and the i3 has front- and side-impact airbags. Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
Because neither NHTSA nor IIHS rated the i3 for crash safety, you should place extra weight on the vehicle’s condition, maintenance history, and any available inspection results when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2015 BMW i3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 13.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 BMW i3 pairs a carbon-fiber-and-aluminum body with a tech-heavy, battery-first design.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $8,454, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $8,745 average.
- It feels genuinely different while keeping the basics of a conventional car.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market case, the 2015 is the better starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If your priority is saving a little money up front, the 2014 is the more budget-conscious alternative and still delivers the i3’s distinctive character.
