overall

Summary
With 797 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,800, 27.5% of 2014 Volkswagen Passat listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind, which shows up most clearly in its emphasis on space. It is also described as an attractive, composed sedan, and its larger size and ride quality were aimed at a broader audience than the enthusiast-focused image Volkswagen had long cultivated.
As part of Volkswagen’s fifth-generation Passat, the 2014 model reflects a shift toward practicality and wider appeal. The available information points to a car that balances comfort and everyday usability, with owners praising its excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, smooth handling, and spacious legroom. At the same time, some reviewers noted missing features, conservative styling, and a lack of advanced technology compared with competitors, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value room, comfort, and value over flashier equipment.

I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.

I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

Reviewed a 2014 Volkswagen TDI SE on Dec 7, 2014
So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, interior condition, and signs of inconsistent repairs. Because some owners mention missing features and maintenance concerns, it’s smart to focus on how well the car has been cared for rather than just the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as simple but not spartan, with an upscale look, while the test model noted hard plastic and V-Tex fake leather. Base-trim equipment gaps matter here, especially if you want a more premium-feeling interior.
- Powertrain: You have four powertrains to choose from, including a 168-hp 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 276-hp 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder. The diesel is the mileage leader, while the V6 is the strongest choice for acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System.
- Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB-connected device support, and access to smartphone music files by artist and more. The text also notes a hardline iPhone connection and a short proprietary cable, which is worth checking if you rely on phone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, or 31 highway with the automatic. The 1.8T returns 24/35, or 34 with the automatic. The V6 returns 20 mpg city/28 highway.
Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat lineup. It makes the most sense if your priority is basic space, comfort, and value rather than extra equipment.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and is the kind of version that balances everyday usability with a more complete feature set.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay more for added equipment and a richer overall experience.
- SEL Premium: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most features and the most premium presentation in the lineup.
The safety content notes that the Passat includes a broad set of standard airbags and stability features, so even the lower trims benefit from a strong safety foundation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 788 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,794, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $7,794 sits slightly below last year's $8,219.
That softer pricing suggests the Passat is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can help you if you’re shopping but may limit upside if you’re planning to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you’re not fighting the market twice.
The model’s value-oriented reputation and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used buyers, especially if you can present a clean history and good maintenance records.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2014 Passat has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick accolade and a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash.
One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as awkward and unnecessarily intrusive because it shrinks the screen with a menu bar.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary describes it as an attractive, composed sedan with a larger, more comfort-focused mission than earlier enthusiast-leaning Volkswagen models.
The bottom line: The 2014 Passat makes the most sense if you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with strong value and a market that currently favors careful shoppers. If you’re price-sensitive, this is a good year to target, but you should be especially selective about history and condition so you can take advantage of the softer pricing without inheriting avoidable problems.
