CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 764 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,852.00, 28.0% of 2014 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
54.2% of 2014 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind, which gives it a clear emphasis on space. It is also described as an attractive, composed sedan that aims to strike a balance between casual and classy rather than chasing an overly sporty or overly flashy image.
As part of Volkswagen’s campaign to target larger sales numbers rather than enthusiast drivers, the 2014 Passat is larger and tuned for a ride that should appeal to a broader audience. The available information also points to technology that any driver can appreciate, while owner feedback reinforces the car’s strengths in fuel economy, comfortable interior space, smooth handling, and value. At the same time, some reviewers noted missing features, conservative styling, and a lack of advanced technology compared with competitors, which helps define the Passat as a practical choice with a few clear trade-offs.

I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.

Reviewed a 2014 Volkswagen TDI SEL Premium on Jun 2, 2014
I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.28/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free enough to recommend for everyday use, with long-term ownership appeal tied to its value, comfort, and fuel economy. The expert notes also emphasize that the Passat is built to be a composed, practical sedan that should be easy to live with over time.
The main used-car risk is that some owners mention maintenance concerns, so you should pay close attention to service records and overall condition before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s features and equipment match the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Passat’s cabin is described as simple but not spartan, with an upscale look, but the test model also lacked foglights and used hard plastic and V-Tex fake leather, so you should check for feature gaps if you’re comparing lower and higher trims.
- Powertrain: You can choose from a 168-hp 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, or a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder; the diesel is the mileage leader, while the V6 brings the strongest acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System.
- Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and smartphone music-file access, but the hardline iPhone cable setup is a drawback you should check for if you rely on phone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, the 1.8T at 24/35, the V6 at 20/28, and the TDI is described as the mileage master.
Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat’s roomy cabin and composed ride, but you should expect the fewest features.
- SE: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and is the trim most likely to balance price, comfort, and equipment.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and more of the technology and leather-oriented content mentioned in the expert notes.
- SEL Premium: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped version and are willing to pay more for the top-end feature set.
The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation, but you should still compare equipment carefully because feature content varies by trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 778 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,820.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $7,911 sits slightly below last year's $8,451.
That softer pricing suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and hold the car for a while. If you keep it in good condition and maintain it well, you may be able to limit further value loss relative to a car that is still dropping quickly.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The Passat has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s coveted Top Safety Pick accolade and is actually a 2013 Top Safety Pick+, with the "plus" representing a new dynamic of testing for the safety organization. The vehicle also earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
You also get a broad safety package that includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. One caveat is the puzzling backup camera interface, which the expert notes as a usability drawback.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert notes emphasize that the Passat is a larger, composed sedan built to deliver a casual-but-classy balance with strong space and everyday usability.
The bottom line: If you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with strong value and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition, the 2014 Passat is a sensible pick. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softened market and decent deal share make this a good year to target, but you should still prioritize history checks and a thorough inspection before you commit.
