What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, interior condition, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because the model’s appeal is tied to comfort, space, and value, you’ll want to make sure the cabin, electronics, and ride quality still match that promise. If a listing has accident history, pay extra attention to panel alignment, paint consistency, and how the car drives at highway speed.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as simple but not spartan, and the test model’s hard plastic and V-Tex fake leather show that some versions lean more basic than upscale. You should compare equipment carefully if you want the more polished-feeling versions.
• Powertrain: There are four powertrains, including a 168-hp 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 276-hp 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder. The diesel is the efficiency standout, while the V6 is the strongest choice for acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System.
• Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth and USB connectivity, plus access to smartphone music files. The text also notes a hardline iPhone connection and a short cable that can be inconvenient to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, or 31 highway with the automatic. The 1.8T returns 24/35, or 34 with the automatic. The V6 returns 20 mpg city/28 highway. The diesel is described as the mileage leader, though no mpg figure is stated.

Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL Premium, TDI SE.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat lineup, but the available information suggests you should expect a more basic experience than the higher trims.
• SE: This is the best-value trim to consider if you want a stronger balance of equipment and price, especially since the lineup’s comfort and value strengths show up well here.
• SEL Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, which is tied to this model and adds a more upscale equipment mix.
• TDI SE: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the diesel powertrain, which is described as the mileage leader.

The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation, including stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, and the Intelligent Crash Response System.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 785 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $7,844 sits slightly below last year's $8,232.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can make it easier to hold value relative to what you paid, especially if you choose a clean, well-kept example.

The Passat’s appeal to buyers who want space, comfort, and value should help keep demand steady. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick accolade and is a 2013 Top Safety Pick+; it also earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash. One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as unnecessarily shrinking the screen.

Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.71% compared with last year.

• The expert summary emphasizes that this Passat is larger, more broadly appealing, and tuned for comfort and everyday usability.

The bottom line: The 2014 Passat makes the most sense if you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re price-sensitive, the current market gives you enough inventory and deal activity to wait for a clean example near the low end of the range.
