Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Generally — the 2014 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for used-car shoppers. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, smooth handling, and spacious legroom. The overview also frames it as a midsize sedan built with American buyers in mind, so you get a strong mix of room and everyday usability rather than a flashy, enthusiast-first personality.

Only 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective even if the car itself is well liked.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a car that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with praise centered on excellent fuel economy, a comfortable interior, smooth handling, and the value it delivers over time. The expert notes also describe the Passat as composed and efficient, which reinforces the sense that it is built for steady, trouble-free commuting rather than drama.

The diesel setup adds a practical ownership wrinkle because the emissions system needs periodic attention, so used buyers should factor in maintenance history and how the car was serviced.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or interior wear that doesn’t match the mileage. Focus on condition and maintenance records, since the Passat’s value proposition depends heavily on whether it has been cared for consistently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The TDI SE model featured 17-inch alloy wheels but did not include foglights, and the cabin was described as simple but not spartan, with hard plastic and V-Tex fake leather in the test vehicle.
• Powertrain: There are 4 powertrains from which to choose, including a base 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder; the diesel delivers the best fuel economy, while the V6 brings the most power.
• Safety package: The Passat includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that turns off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights.
• Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth pairing, USB-connected device support, and access to smartphone music files, but the hardline iPhone connection and short cable are drawbacks.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, the 1.8 turbo returns 24 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, the V6 gets 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and the TDI is described as the mileage master.

Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5, 1.8T, V6, TDI.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are mainly focused on getting the Passat’s space, comfort, and value without paying for extra power or premium equipment.
• 1.8T: This is the best-value choice if you want a stronger balance of efficiency and everyday drivability, since the turbocharged engine improves on the base model’s fuel economy while staying in the mainstream of the lineup.
• V6: Choose this if you want the most power in the lineup and are willing to trade away some efficiency for stronger acceleration.
• TDI: This is the pick for maximum fuel economy and long-distance commuting, but you should be comfortable with diesel-specific ownership considerations.

The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation, including stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, and the crash response system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 822 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,639, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $7,639 sits slightly below last year's $8,175.

That softer pricing suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you keep the car in clean condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned than someone who pays too much up front. The model’s value story is strongest when buyers see it as a practical, well-kept sedan rather than a status purchase.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s coveted Top Safety Pick accolade and is actually a 2013 Top Safety Pick+, with the "plus" representing a new dynamic of testing for the safety organization. It also earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash. One caveat is the puzzling backup camera interface, which shrinks the screen and is a usability drawback you should notice on a test drive.

Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.55% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 Passat is presented as a larger, more comfort-focused sedan with strong space, composed handling, and broad everyday appeal.

The bottom line: If you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with strong value and you’re shopping the current market carefully, the 2014 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softened pricing makes this year worth a close look, but you should still prioritize condition and service history over mileage alone.

How does the 2014 Volkswagen Passat compare to the 2014 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 7.8/10 and the 2014 Toyota Camry 7.5/10.

The Passat gives you a lower average used price and more listings to choose from, while the Camry brings a stronger fuel-economy edge and a slightly higher horsepower figure. The Passat also has a better accident-free share in the comparison data, which may matter if you want a cleaner pool of listings to shop from. If you want the more affordable used buy with strong space and value, the Passat has the edge; if you want the more established mainstream alternative with better mpg, the Camry is the safer comparison point.
