Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser stands out as a rugged, retro-styled SUV built for drivers who care more about capability than polish. Its boxy design was inspired by Toyota’s classic FJ lineage, and underneath that distinctive body it used durable components shared with other Toyota trucks and SUVs. That hardware helped give it the kind of off-road character that made it appealing to buyers looking for something more serious than a typical crossover.
For 2014, the FJ Cruiser’s 4.0-liter V6 was rated at 260 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, and Toyota paired it with a reputation for reliability and durable transmissions and four-wheel-drive systems. It also offered practical touches that fit its mission, including rear-hinged doors, a split-folding rear seat that opened up 66.8 cubic feet of cargo space, a factory roof rack, and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. The 2014 model year was its last in North America, and Toyota marked the end with the Trail Teams Ultimate Edition, which added upgraded suspension components, bead-lock wheels, chunky off-road tires, a beefier skid plate package, and Heritage Blue paint.
The tradeoffs were part of the package. The FJ Cruiser was known for poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and poor visibility, and its starting MSRP was around $28,000 when new. Even so, its strong resale value, off-road ability, and loyal following helped make it a distinctive used SUV for buyers who wanted something tough, capable, and a little different.

I love these trucks and recommend them highly as very good quality and has reliability. I already own three of these. Retains value more than any truck I know of and this was true throughout their years of production and beyond.

The FJ is an iconic tank! The design and over-engineering than went into the FJ is like no other Toyota I’ve own. We currently have a 2023 4Runner ORP, 2020 Tundra Limited OR, and a 2020 Tacoma OR…I’ll choose the FJ to drive any chance I get! No wonder the cult following and amazing resale/retention of value! Buy a clean, well maintained 2014 FJ while you can, very few left I could find that checked these boxes.

How much does the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,033 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,033 |
| Year-Round High | $30,322 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $29,497 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.96% |
Prices have softened 4.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 120 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its great driving experience, reliability, and strong off-road capabilities, and many also like its comfort and the way it holds value over time. If you want a rugged SUV with a distinctive personality and a clear off-road focus, this model year fits that use case well. With 27.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, and drivers also describe it as dependable and trouble-free over time. That lines up with the model’s reputation for durable components and a loyal following among buyers who want something they can count on.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the vehicle’s basic reputation and more about how hard it may have been used, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected the frame, suspension, or off-road hardware. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on underbody condition, signs of trail use, and wear that may not show up in photos. Because this model is often bought for capability, you should pay close attention to how the vehicle was actually used and maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 120 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,033, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser's resale value?
The current average of $28,033 sits slightly below last year's $29,497.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the softer trend means resale gains may be more limited in the near term unless the vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, or unusually desirable. Strong condition and documented history should matter more than ever if you want to protect value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
You should focus on the 2014 if you want the last North American FJ Cruiser and value its strong owner satisfaction, distinctive character, and current pricing. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and prioritize the cleanest example with the best history, since condition and accident status matter a lot in this market.
