Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.

It stands out as a traditional body-on-frame SUV with genuine off-road ability, while still being comfortable enough for everyday driving and freeway use. That makes it a strong fit if you want rugged construction and real utility instead of a softer crossover formula.

32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 4Runner’s rugged construction and traditional SUV layout support its reputation for durability, and the expert review emphasizes that it is built to handle rough use without losing everyday drivability. Its resale-focused ownership profile also suggests that buyers tend to value it for the long haul.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying too much for a truck that may have been used hard off-road or in demanding conditions.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?

At 55% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, trail driving, or other heavy-duty work. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear underneath, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR5 is the starting point with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, increased ground clearance, and rugged visual upgrades, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, luxury-inspired front body work, front and rear parking sensors, and dual-zone climate control.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4-wheel drive is available on the SR5 and standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4-wheel drive with Active Traction Control.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim. It adds iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, and an integrated backup camera, while the Trail Premium also brings the Entune App Suite.
• Fuel efficiency: The SR5 RWD returns 17 mpg city and 22 highway, while 4WD versions return 17/21.

Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the value starting point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for trail-focused or luxury extras. It gives you the essential equipment and is the trim to consider if you want the lowest entry price.
• Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s off-road character to come through more clearly. It adds crawl control, more ground clearance, and rugged visual upgrades, and it’s the one to choose if trail use matters to you.
• Limited: This is the trim to buy if you want the most road-friendly and upscale version. It adds 20-inch wheels, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and a smoother, more comfort-oriented setup.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core protection features.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 644 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.71% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,593, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $20,194 sits slightly below last year's $20,544.

That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. Even so, the 4Runner’s strong reputation and loyal following support demand, so well-kept examples should remain relatively easy to resell. If you buy a clean, well-maintained truck at the right price, you should be in a good position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system. That gives you a solid baseline of active and passive safety equipment for a truck-based SUV.

Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends everyday drivability with true off-road capability while staying less extreme than the Wrangler or FJ.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,612, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,194 average.
• It shifts toward harder-core off-road focus and is described as better for rock-strewn paths.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and a broader all-around SUV, the 2014 is the smarter buy. If your priority is more serious trail use and you’re willing to pay more, the 2015 is the better fit.

How does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner compare to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Our experts score the 2014 Toyota 4Runner 8.2/10 and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 7.5/10. The 4Runner is the more rugged, body-on-frame choice, while the Grand Cherokee leans more toward a conventional crossover-style balance of power and efficiency. If you want true SUV character and off-road credibility, the 4Runner is the stronger pick. If you care more about highway MPG and a lower average used price, the Grand Cherokee has the edge.
