CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 610 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,609.00, 30.0% of 2014 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota 4Runner 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
58.9% of 2014 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it remains a traditional body-on-frame SUV in a market that has largely moved toward car-based crossovers. That gives it a rare blend of ruggedness and everyday usability, with the ability to handle mountain roads and freeway driving with equal confidence. It is described as a vehicle that combines comfortable daily driving with true off-road capability, making it appealing to buyers who want an SUV that still feels genuinely truck-like.
Its character is also defined by balance rather than extremity. The 4Runner is presented as less extreme than the Jeep Wrangler or Toyota’s own FJ, while still preserving the kind of capability that crossover shoppers may miss. That makes it distinctive for drivers who want durability and off-road strength without giving up all-road comfort.

Great vehicle overall. Very solid drivetrain. I wouldn’t compare it to much. I own a 2006 with 320k and running strong.

I love this car, i've just decided i need something a little smaller for my family. We had plenty of space on our family vacation and got great gas mileage on the highway (24MPG). Only thing i wish it had was a power lift gate.

It’s a comfortable vehicle. I like all the features it comes with. It rides smoothly. I’m so happy with the heated seats. I don’t care for the moonroof but it wasn’t a feature that made me not want to buy this model.

How much does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,710 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,601.68 |
| Year-Round High | $21,457.17 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,455 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.47% |
Prices have softened 3.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 617 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $19,601.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert score is 8.17/10.
The 4Runner stands out because it stays true to a traditional body-on-frame SUV formula while still working as an everyday vehicle. The overview frames it as a rugged SUV that can handle mountain roads and freeway driving with equal confidence, and the expert testing backs up that balance with strong marks for form and function, cost effectiveness, and technology.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
That combination makes it a good fit if you want durability and real off-road capability without giving up all-road comfort. The 27.4% share of good or great deals suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert testing both point to a vehicle built around ruggedness rather than flash, which usually matters when you plan to keep a used SUV for a long time. The traditional truck-based construction is part of its appeal, and the expert notes emphasize that it is designed to handle rough use while still feeling usable day to day.
Its 4.0-liter V6 and 5-speed automatic are not cutting-edge, but they are presented as a proven setup for this kind of SUV. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests the 4Runner tends to hold value well, which often goes hand in hand with durable ownership appeal.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is buying a hard-used example without confirming how it was maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on overall condition, signs of off-road wear, and whether the equipment on the truck matches the trim you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and rugged visual enhancements, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, luxury-inspired front body work, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and other upscale features.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4-wheel drive is available on the SR5 and standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4-wheel drive with Active Traction Control.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
- Infotainment: Bluetooth hands-free calling with voice commands is standard. A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim, along with iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, and an integrated backup camera. Entune App Suite is reserved for the Trail Premium.
- Fuel efficiency: The SR5 rear-wheel-drive model returns 17 mpg city and 22 highway, while 4-wheel-drive versions return 17/21.
Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the starting point, and it gives you the core 4Runner experience with the standard V6, Bluetooth hands-free calling, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and the basic utility you need. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and do not need the extra off-road or luxury equipment.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s rugged personality to come through. It adds crawl control, more ground clearance, and a more off-road-focused setup, and it is the trim that best matches the model’s adventurous character.
- Limited: This is the right choice if you care more about road comfort and upscale features than trail hardware. It adds 20-inch wheels, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and a smoother, more road-friendly feel.
The Trail Premium note matters if you want the touchscreen, backup camera, and Entune App Suite, since those features are not part of the base Trail setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 617 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,601.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $20,710 sits slightly below last year's $21,455.
That softer pricing suggests buyers have a bit more leverage today than they did a year ago. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and its loyal following help support long-term demand.
Because this model tends to hold value well, a clean example with the right trim and condition can still be a strong ownership choice if you plan to sell later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system as standard safety equipment.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety setup is straightforward and comprehensive for the class, with stability control, traction control, and a full set of airbags included from the start. The expert commentary also notes that the upright, truck-based design gives you better visibility than many newer vehicles, which can help in everyday driving.
The main caveat is that this is still a traditional body-on-frame SUV, so it may feel less car-like than many modern crossovers if you are used to softer, more isolated handling.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It preserves the traditional body-on-frame SUV character while balancing daily usability with real off-road capability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $21,957, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,710 average.
- It adds a harder-core off-road focus and more cargo-friendly utility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If your priority is a more specialized off-road setup and you are willing to pay more, the 2015 is the better alternative.
