Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns 5/5 from users and 8.2/10 from experts. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.

It stands out as a traditional body-on-frame SUV with true off-road capability and everyday usability, so you get ruggedness without giving up all-road comfort. The expert review also highlights its durable, truck-based character and its ability to balance freeway driving with rougher terrain.

The market shows 33.2% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2014 4Runner is described as a durable, traditional SUV with rough construction that can withstand a significant impact. It also has the kind of loyal following that tends to support long-term confidence in ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck-based SUV can hide wear from harder use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?

At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of off-road use, suspension wear, and any evidence that the SUV has lived a harder life than its mileage suggests.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SR5 is the starting point with 17-inch, 6-spoke alloy wheels, a multi-information display, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and rugged visual and functional enhancements, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, unique luxury-inspired front body work, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and other upscale features.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4WD is standard on the Trail, and the Limited uses full-time 4WD with Active Traction Control.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: Bluetooth hands-free calling with voice commands is standard. A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim, along with iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, and an integrated backup camera. Entune App Suite is also tied to the Trail Premium sub-trim.
• Fuel efficiency: The SR5 RWD returns 17 mpg city and 22 highway, while 4WD versions return 17/21.

Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner experience with the standard comfort and convenience basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and do not need the extra off-road hardware or luxury upgrades.
• Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s rugged personality to come through most clearly. It adds crawl control, more ground clearance, and off-road-focused hardware, so it suits you if capability matters more than road polish.
• Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most road-friendly and upscale version. It adds the most comfort and convenience equipment, plus parking sensors and dual-zone climate control, making it the better fit if you want a more premium daily driver.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so your trim choice is mostly about capability, comfort, and convenience.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 647 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,602, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $20,274 sits slightly below last year's $20,586.

That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, but not dramatically. For you as a future seller, that means the 4Runner is still holding value reasonably well relative to many used SUVs.

Its rugged reputation and loyal buyer base should help support demand if you keep the vehicle in strong condition. Well-maintained examples are likely to remain easier to move than more ordinary crossovers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock braking, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system. That gives you a solid baseline of active and passive safety equipment for a truck-based SUV.

The review also notes that its upright construction helps visibility, which can make it easier to place on the road. If you are considering a used one, pay close attention to overall condition and how it was used, since hard off-road life can affect safety-related wear.

Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines true off-road capability with everyday usability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,504, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,274 average.
• It leans harder into serious off-road use and adds more utility-focused appeal.

The 2014 is the better path if you want a slightly cheaper used 4Runner with broad appeal and strong value. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and want a more off-road-focused setup, the 2015 is worth a look.

How does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner compare to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Our experts score the 2014 Toyota 4Runner 8.2/10 and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 7.5/10. The 4Runner is the more rugged, traditional SUV, while the Grand Cherokee is the more affordable used buy in this comparison. You get stronger off-road character and better long-term value appeal in the 4Runner, but the Jeep brings a lower average used price and more listings to shop.
