CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 1,262 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,112.00, 29.6% of 2014 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Outback 4.67 / 5 stars.
62.5% of 2014 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, capable wagon that had already moved well beyond its original roots by this point. In the fourth generation, Subaru had made the Outback taller and more crossover-like, while also giving it a longer wheelbase and expanded width to help add interior space. For 2014, Subaru made EyeSight standard on Outback Premium models, adding adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane-departure warning to a vehicle that already emphasized all-wheel drive and all-weather usefulness.
What makes the 2014 model appealing is the way it balances everyday comfort with genuine utility. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder produced 170 horsepower and an equal amount of torque, while the available 3.6-liter flat-six made 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Subaru also offered navigation and a backup camera on an 8-inch touchscreen, which was a fairly advanced setup for the time. Buyers looking for a used Outback often value this generation for its roomy cabin, generous ground clearance, and reputation for being a solid, durable choice.
There are tradeoffs, though. The fourth-generation Outback’s handling was hindered somewhat by its taller body and added weight, and the six-cylinder version was harder to find and less fuel-efficient than the four-cylinder models. Some reliability trackers also give this generation mixed marks, with more electrical problems than later models. Even so, the 2014 Outback remains distinctive because it combines the Outback formula’s core strengths—space, traction, and capability—with a useful set of standard safety and convenience features.

The owner is very forthcoming with information about the vehicle, and make test driving it as easy as possible. The car appears to be in good shape and is being offered at a good price. It steers, corners, accelerates, and brakes well, as long as you are familiar with stick shift. However, I did not find the sweet spot in the manual transmission in my test drive that the owner refers to in the ad. It felt a bit more loosely coupled than I expected, given this. Still, it seems to be a good car.

I have a 2014 2.5i manual transmission And I absolutely love it. It has more power than I thought and I average about 30 -33 miles to the gallon on the highway. I can’t say enough about this car. I feel safe and I love the suspension and how it drives. I got this car specifically to take on long trips to the mountains. I’ve been in the process of researching camper conversion kits for the Outback. So far it’s ability to navigate over rough terrain is awesome. The biggest feature for me was the manual transmission that is only about $1200 to fix vs. a CVT auto transmission upwards of 6000. The radio is somewhat outdated but I can overlook that based on the value and other features of this car

2014 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2014 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2014 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,112 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,117.68 |
| Year-Round High | $9,868.91 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,802 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.04% |
Prices have softened 7.04% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,270 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $9,117.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its reliable performance, safety features, and upgraded standard equipment, while also highlighting its handling and long-term durability. The Outback also fits well if you want a capable vehicle for various driving conditions, especially if you value all-wheel drive and practical utility over luxury touches. With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliable performance, long-term durability, and a vehicle you can count on for everyday use. That kind of owner sentiment matters if you want a used car that feels dependable over time rather than just appealing on paper. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure maintenance history is solid before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Outback?
At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to overall condition, maintenance records, and any signs of past repairs. Because this model year has a meaningful share of incident history in the market, the best buys are the ones with clear documentation and clean mechanical presentation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate buyer's market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,270 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,117.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $9,112 sits slightly below last year's $9,802.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can limit near-term upside if you buy at the wrong price. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is choosing a well-kept example with strong documentation and avoiding cars with questionable history. A lower entry price can help offset future depreciation, especially if you buy near the bottom of the range.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,145, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,112 average.
- It was redesigned for a roomier cabin and a more refined look.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because it combines lower pricing with solid owner satisfaction. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer redesign, the 2015 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize a more spacious and updated feel.
