How much does the 2014 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 3.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,856 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Foresters to compare.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.58/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, and enjoyable driving experience, and they also call out its smooth ride and great fuel economy. From a practical standpoint, that lines up well with its role as a midsize, 5-passenger crossover that leans into all-weather usefulness and everyday versatility. If you want a crossover that prioritizes capability and utility over flash, this one fits that brief well.

32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to reliability as one of the Forester’s core strengths, alongside a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience and confidence over the long term. The expert review also emphasizes how the Forester keeps moving through snow, ice, mud, and rain without fuss, which reinforces its reputation for being a vehicle you can count on in rough weather. Its all-wheel-drive system and safety structure add to that sense of durability.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that some examples may show wear in lower-trim equipment and older tech, so condition matters a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because owner feedback mentions lower-trim shortcomings and some durability complaints, it also makes sense to focus on interior condition, electronics, and how well the cabin has held up over time. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest example ahead of the cheapest one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i starts with a simpler setup, while the 2.5i Premium adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. The cabin is straightforward, but lower trims can feel less solid, so the Premium is the better-value choice if you want a more complete everyday package.
• Powertrain: The 2.5i trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an available CVT. If you want more punch, the 2.0XT trims use a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you about lane departure or an imminent crash. It is optional on most trims, so check whether a given listing has it.
• Infotainment: The Premium trim’s touchscreen handles stereo and navigation, plus Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is dated for the model year, and the screen and icons are small enough to be distracting.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with a 6-speed manual is rated at 22/29/24 mpg, the test model is rated at 24/32/27 mpg, and the turbo XT trims return 23/28/25 mpg.

Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Forester formula with the 2.5-liter engine and standard all-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least equipped.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the massive sunroof and roof rails while keeping the Forester’s practical character intact. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
• 2.0XT Premium: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the more energetic driving feel. It also gets X-Mode, which helps in more inclement terrain.
• 2.0XT Touring: This is the top-end choice if you want the turbo power with the most upscale equipment in the lineup. It is the most expensive path, so it makes the most sense if you want the fullest feature set.

Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims, so verify whether a specific listing includes it.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

The market looks moderate and selective, which means you can shop carefully and still find value.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,856 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,511, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $9,754 sits slightly below last year's $10,070.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and hold it for a while. For a future seller, that means your biggest value protection will come from choosing a clean, well-kept example rather than assuming the market will reward average condition. Listings with strong equipment and a clean history should be easier to move later than rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is described as an incredibly safe vehicle, and its safety structure is backed by 7 standard airbags, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you drift out of your lane or if a crash is imminent. It is optional on most trims, so you should confirm whether a used listing includes it. The expert review also notes that the Forester’s traction and control in rain, ice, and snow are a major part of its safety story.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 redesign brought stronger all-weather capability and a more versatile crossover shape.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,180, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,754 average.
• It adds a Top Safety Pick rating and stronger recognition from Motor Trend.

The 2014 is the better pick if you want the lower entry price and a strong value story. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer-year alternative with a bit more recognition on the safety and awards front, the 2015 is worth a look. For most price-sensitive buyers, the 2014 remains the smarter buy.
