Overview

If your daily commute leads you over the river and through the woods… not to mention those nasty rock-strewn gullies, then take a look at the 2014 Nissan Xterra. A downsized throwback to the oft-maligned truck-based full-size sport utility vehicle, this 5-passenger midsize tank is long on off-road prowess, but needless to say comes up a bit short at pavement-borne driving comfort and agility.
No matter, though. All trims, said trims being the base X, the midlevel S and the terrain-taming Pro-4X with its standard 4-wheel drive (4WD), boast a peppy V6, nearly 66 cubic feet of cargo area with the rear seatbacks folded down and standard skid plates. Both lower trims are delivered with standard rear-wheel drive (RWD), but of course also remain eligible for 4WD all-weather cruising and all-terrain bushwhacking.
Some slight changes are expected for 2014, including Bluetooth connectivity and an upgraded stereo in the base X trim, upgraded alloy wheels in both the X and the S, and standard heated front seats in the Pro-4X. All this is an effort to keep pace with such challengers as Jeep's Wrangler and Cherokee offerings as well as Toyota’s well-wrought FJ Cruiser, all of which feature similar ruggedness and pricing.
The potent 4.0-liter V6 powerplant returns for all Xterra variations and mates with either a standard 5-speed automatic transmission (RWD trims) or a heady 6-speed manual shifter (optional in 4WD editions) to deliver a respectable 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. Mileage is, despite variable valve timing (VVT), a not-so-spiffy 16 mpg city/22 highway in RWD-equipped trims and 15/20 in 4WD variants, but towing is maxed out at a useful 5,000 pounds with the proper and available equipment. Meantime, Nissan’s 4WD system offers a multi-mode low-range transfer case and electronically locking rear differential that allow for worry-free expeditions through untamed wilderness.
Flaunting standard 16-inch steel wheels (with those new and upgraded alloy wheels optional), a roof rack and skid plates outside, the base Xterra X also boasts cloth upholstery, simulated alloy accents, remote power door locks and power windows inside. Cruise control is again standard in this entry-level trim, as are tilt-wheel steering and air conditioning, while this latest year’s version additionally sports an upgraded audio system with a single-CD player and 6 speakers. Finally, as mentioned, standard Bluetooth hands-free calling is now standard as well.
Moving up to the midlevel S, expect to find such additions as the new-look 16-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable outside mirrors, roof rails and satellite radio, with all-terrain tires an available option.
The trail-busting Pro-4X, meantime, flaunts beefed-up off-road suspension components, as well as hill start assist and descent control, each standard (optional in the lower trims). The list continues with roof-mounted off-road driving lights, premium cloth upholstery, new-for-2014 heated front seats, a fold-flat front passenger seat and unique upgraded cabin décor. This outrageous outback-organizing off-roader also boasts standard navigation, a rear-view camera, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a Rockford Fosgate stereo upgrade hosting 9 premium speakers.
Options-wise, lower trims can be equipped with many items found standard in higher trims, while the Pro-4X Leather Package includes leather upholstery, but deletes the fold-flat front passenger seat. Such add-ons as step rails are available to the X and S trims, with a towing package available lineup-wide.
Noteworthy standard safety equipment for all 2014 Xterra trims, finally, includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, and active front headrests. A remote antitheft alarm is standard across the lineup, while the Pro-4X tosses in standard front fog/driving lights.

This is no soccer mom car. It is distinct and not a dinky 4 cylinder. Has plenty of cargo room and even a hidden compartment for maintenance items like jumper cables and more. Has no blind spots and I dont even miss the absent back up camera reserved for the 2015 model. Just bad gas mileage. I love it.

I really like that it was available with a 6 speed manual transmission. I am disappointed that Nissan is going like everyone else and eliminating their manual transmissions. I almost never get stuck in the snow and it’s easy to see out of all the way around! It’s too bad they discontinued this model in 2015.

How much does the 2014 Nissan Xterra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,348 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,034 |
| Year-Round High | $13,289 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,024 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +2.69% |
Prices are up 2.69% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 135 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2014 Nissan Xterra a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction with this model year.
That kind of feedback suggests you may be looking at a vehicle that has resonated well with owners over time, and 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which adds some value-oriented options to the market.
Is the 2014 Nissan Xterra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
For used buyers, that kind of owner feedback can reduce some of the uncertainty around long-term ownership, though you should still focus on maintenance history and overall condition before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Xterra?
At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on any serious candidate and pay close attention to prior damage, repairs, and title status. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, alignment, and signs of uneven wear so you can separate a clean example from one that has been repaired well enough to hide problems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Xterra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 135 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.69% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 60.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,034, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Nissan Xterra's resale value?
The current average of $12,348 sits slightly above last year's $12,024.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which can help support resale value if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. For a future seller, that means a clean, well-priced example may hold buyer interest better than one with visible wear or a questionable history. The current pricing trend also suggests there is still demand, which can make it easier to find a buyer later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Xterra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.69% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want this model year, the 2014 makes sense when you can find a clean example with a solid history and a price near the lower end of the range. If you're especially price-sensitive, keep shopping and compare nearby years to see whether a better combination of condition, history, and asking price shows up.
