CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 1,427 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,669.00, 27.6% of 2014 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Nissan Altima 3.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
61.2% of 2014 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Nissan Altima stands out as a midsize family sedan that prioritizes the basics well. It is described as safe, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and affordable, which makes it appealing to buyers who want a practical daily driver rather than an engaging one. It also earns its place among America’s best-selling models, suggesting broad mainstream appeal.
At the same time, the 2014 Altima is not presented as a car for drivers seeking excitement. The test-drive impression says there is nothing joyful associated with driving it, and that the latest version is not particularly engaging to drive. Even so, it remains a sensible choice for shoppers who value comfort and efficiency, with some room for additional refinement.

I have owned many cars in the past including last a 2010 Acura TL. After renting a Nissan Altima and driving it round trip over 1200 miles for a trip I was sold and got rid of my Acura and brought the 2014 Nissan Altima S with the Sport Value Package. I absolutely love the gas mileage I get from it I easily go all highway driving over 600 miles before needing gas and the features are great for me not too many not too few features. I think it has a great ride and looks impressive. I get lots of comments on it and so far after purchasing it in mid September I have only had oil changes necessary and anticipate no problems in the future.

This is a very comfortable car—more comfortable and more fun to drive than a Toyota Camry. This is a good car for commuters because of the comfort and the fuel efficiency. I also own a 2010 Nissan Altima, and I have had that one for 5.5 years. It has 130,000 miles on it, and I have never had mechanical problems with it. On paper, the Camry and accord look like more reliable cars than the Altima, but the used Altimas really are much more affordable, more comfortable, and (as I said) I certainly have not had reliability issues with Altima so far.

I love the features of my car, the sound system is my favorite part. I definitely thought it was a great value. I just wish it had heated seats, thats the only thing missing.

If you find a listing below $7,649.75, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Nissan Altima a good car?
With a 3.83/5 user rating and an expert score of 7.83/10, the 2014 Altima lands in the solid-but-selective-buy category.
The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Owners most often praise its comfort, stylish interior, and fuel efficiency, and the sound system also gets strong marks. That lines up with the car’s role as a practical commuter and family sedan, especially if you value a spacious cabin and easy daily use. The overall package is strongest when you want comfort and efficiency more than driving excitement.
The market also shows 24.1% good and great deals, which gives you room to shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Nissan Altima reliable?
The 2014 Altima is positioned as a cost-effective family sedan, but its long-term ownership story is mixed.
Owners describe it as dependable in some respects, but they also mention a need for repairs, which tempers confidence. Expert commentary also points to better-than-average dependability over time, while noting that some owner dissatisfaction has centered on squeaks, rattles, and NissanConnect-related frustrations. On the upside, the car’s fuel-efficient 4-cylinder and CVT combination helps keep running costs in check.
For used buyers, that means you should expect a car that can serve you well, but only if you verify maintenance history and inspect carefully for wear-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Altima?
At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body repairs, alignment, and signs of uneven wear. Pay close attention to cabin condition, electronics behavior, and any evidence of past collision repair, since those are the areas most likely to affect your ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5 trim lacks NissanConnect Apps technology, smart automatic headlights, and Nissan Intelligent Key passive entry. The 2.5 S adds cruise control, a power driver’s seat, extra speakers, and passive entry, while the 2.5 SV adds 17-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, and NissanConnect Apps with a 5-inch touchscreen. The SL adds leather seats, a Bose audio system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more comfort-focused equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder makes 182 hp and returns 31 mpg in combined driving, while the 3.5-liter V6 makes 270 hp and trades efficiency for quicker acceleration. Both use a CVT and front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: The optional Technology Package adds navigation, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV and SL trims. Base trims miss those features.
- Infotainment: Most versions use a 5-inch touchscreen, while the navigation system adds a 7-inch display. NissanConnect supports smartphone apps, hands-free text messaging, and Bluetooth-based app integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine returns 31 mpg in combined driving, and the 3.5-liter V6 is rated at 25 mpg combined. In testing, the 2.5 achieved 28.5 mpg on a heavy suburban cycle.
Which 2014 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2014 Nissan Altima is offered in 6 trim levels: 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5 is the most stripped-down version, and it misses NissanConnect Apps, smart automatic headlights, and passive entry. If you want the lowest entry price, it gets you the core sedan experience, but not much else.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.5 SV is the best value pick because it adds the reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, and NissanConnect Apps without jumping all the way to luxury-oriented equipment.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5 SL is the most appealing upscale choice, with leather seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a Bose audio system, and more comfort features that make daily driving easier.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are aimed at off-road use, so there isn’t a special daily-driver caution to weigh here.
The Technology Package is worth considering on SV and SL trims if you want navigation and the added driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Altima?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 24.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,421 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 50.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,649.75, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $7,642 sits slightly below last year's $8,394.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you if you buy now and hold the car for a while. If you maintain it well and choose a clean example, you may be better positioned than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average. The flip side is that a car with accident history or deferred maintenance will be harder to resell later, so condition matters a lot.
Is the 2014 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2014 Altima gets a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is called a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The optional Technology Package adds navigation, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV and SL trims. Those features can meaningfully improve awareness in daily driving, though the blind-spot system could be more assertive. If safety is a priority, look for a car equipped with that package rather than assuming every used Altima has the same protection level.
Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.95% compared with last year.
- It offers a safe, comfortable, fuel-efficient, and affordable family-sedan package.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $8,388, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,642 average.
- It adds a more polished all-around balance of handling, fuel economy, technology, and comfort.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and are willing to shop carefully, the 2014 is the smarter buy. If you can stretch for a newer example and want a slightly more refined overall package, the 2015 is the better secondary path.
