What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Kia Soul?

At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because some owners mention minor cosmetic issues such as dents, it’s smart to separate appearance concerns from mechanical condition before you buy.

A pre-purchase inspection is worth it, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one priced near the low end of the range. Focus on how the car drives, whether the electronics work properly, and whether the interior and exterior condition match the seller’s description.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gives you a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Plus adds mirror-mounted LED turn signals, remote keyless entry, and 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Exclaim brings 18-inch alloys, a backup camera, UVO connectivity services, and a chilled glovebox. If you want the best value, the Plus is the trim that most clearly adds useful equipment without jumping straight to the top price.
• Powertrain: The base trim uses a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder with 130 hp, while the Plus and Exclaim use a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 164 hp. Fuel economy is 24 mpg city and 30 highway with the 1.6-liter engine, and 23 mpg city and 31 highway with the 2.0-liter engine.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, electronic brakeforce distribution, a tire pressure monitoring system, side impact door beams, and front and rear crumple zones. Uprated models feature a backup camera.
• Infotainment: All trims come standard with USB/auxiliary jacks, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and a 6-speaker audio system with A-pillar-mounted tweeters. The optional system centers on an 8-inch touchscreen and adds voice-command navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.6-liter engine returns 24 mpg city and 30 highway, while the 2.0-liter engine returns 23 mpg city and 31 highway.

Which 2014 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2014 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Plus (+), Exclaim (!).

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want standard Bluetooth, SiriusXM, USB/auxiliary inputs, and a multifunction steering wheel. It makes the most sense if you care more about affordability than extra convenience features.
• Plus (+): This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds remote keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, and mirror-mounted LED turn signals without pushing all the way to the top trim. It’s the trim to target if you want a better-equipped Soul without overspending.
• Exclaim (!): This is the most feature-rich version, adding 18-inch alloys, a backup camera, UVO connectivity services, and a chilled glovebox. Choose it if you want the most equipment and don’t mind paying more for it.

The safety content notes that uprated models feature a backup camera.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Kia Soul?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 875 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.65% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $6,818, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $6,892 sits slightly below last year's $7,153.

That softer pricing can work in your favor if you’re buying now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited unless the market tightens. If you plan to sell later, a lower entry price can help reduce depreciation pressure, especially if you buy a well-kept example.

Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment should matter more than ever when you eventually resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Kia Soul safe?

The 2014 Kia Soul earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a full complement of front- and side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, electronic brakeforce distribution, a tire pressure monitoring system, side impact door beams, and front and rear crumple zones. Uprated models also feature a backup camera.

The upright design helps visibility, which is a practical safety advantage when you’re driving in traffic or parking. If you’re comparing trims, the backup camera on higher-spec models is a useful extra to look for.

Should I buy a 2014 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its unusually strong technology and personality.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,850, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $6,892 average.
• It adds more power, extra trunk space, and a few additional safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because prices are softer and the model still scores well with owners. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer version with a few meaningful upgrades, the 2015 is the better path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2014 and shop for a clean, well-equipped example.
