Why it stands out
The 2014 Honda Pilot stands out as a practical midsize crossover SUV built around space and utility. It has lots of room for people, lots of room for cargo, and lots of room to stash all your stuff, making it a strong fit for buyers who need a family-size vehicle that can carry as many people and as much gear as possible while still fitting within owners’ budgets and garages.
That focus on function over style is central to its appeal. The 2014 Honda Pilot might not be pretty or the most technologically sophisticated conveyance, but it is designed to do the job well, and that straightforward approach is part of why it can be so appealing to the people who need it most. Owner feedback also points to spacious seating, reliability, comfort, and versatility as recurring strengths. At the same time, some drivers have noted hard shifting and a wide turn radius, so its strengths in practicality come with a few everyday compromises.

I cant say enough about this vehicle. Its my truck!! I currently have a 2009 and I will be upgrading to this model. The safety rating is high , and very comfortable at that. The cargo space stands out above all others, all adults and children in carseats have space. Most vesitile vehicle seat related, cant beat 8 seats!! Love this vehicle!!

The pilot is a solid vehicle if you take care of it. My sister in law bought one new in 2003 and still has it. My son has a 2013 with 111,000 miles. If you take of it and do the required maintenance it will last well over 200,000 miles. Dont skip the timing belt interval this is a interface engine and will be junk if the belt breaks.

The Pilot seems to be in good condition. That said, it had been involved in a more serious accident which gave me reason to hold off on its purchase. In addition there were approximately $2,000 in fees that made me walk away.

I sold Hondas for 5 years and the only thing I would change is the brand of tires. I would go with Michelins which is what came on them from the factory when I was selling them.

How much does the 2014 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,819 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,619.80 |
| Year-Round High | $11,256.30 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,200 |

Prices have softened 3.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 769 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $10,619.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot a good car?
Generally — 4.44/5 from owners points to strong satisfaction for this model year. The expert rating is 6.83/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise the spacious seating, comfort, reliability, and versatility, which lines up with the Pilot’s family-first mission. The overview also frames it as a practical midsize crossover SUV built around space and utility, so it makes sense if you need room for people and cargo more than style or tech. That said, the same feedback also points to hard shifting and a wide turn radius, so you should expect some everyday compromises.
With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is enough market opportunity to shop selectively rather than rush.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights reliability, and the review summary also points to a vehicle that many drivers feel is dependable and versatile over time. The expert cost-effectiveness notes say reliability is expected to be better than average, and the Pilot’s straightforward design supports that reputation. Honda also positions the model as a practical, durable family hauler, which fits the long-term ownership story.
For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright fragility and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your inspection on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the vehicle drives in everyday use. Because this model is valued for practicality, you should also make sure the cabin, cargo area, and family-use features are all in good shape.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the least expensive version and adds 4WD for extra traction, while the EX brings 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 10-way power driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, and a security system. The EX-L adds leather seats, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof, and a power tailgate with separate liftglass, while the Touring adds navigation, rear-seat entertainment, a premium audio system, memory for the driver’s seat, and unique 18-inch machined-finish wheels.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Variable Cylinder Management helps conserve fuel, and the available 4WD system adds a Lock mode for extra traction.
- Safety package: Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is standard, and the Pilot includes a basic reversing camera. The tech suite is limited compared with newer family SUVs, and more advanced driver-assistance features are not part of the package.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, a USB port, triple-zone climate control with a humidity sensor, and a basic reversing camera. Navigation, an upgraded camera, rear-seat DVD entertainment, video input jacks, a 115-volt power outlet, and a premium sound system are reserved for higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The Touring 4WD is rated at 17 mpg city/24 highway/20 combined, and skipping 4WD improves each figure by 1 mpg.
Which 2014 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2014 Honda Pilot is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the Pilot’s space and utility at the lowest price. It is the trim to consider if you care more about value than convenience features.
- EX: This adds a better everyday equipment mix with 18-inch aluminum wheels, a power driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, and a security system. It is the trim that most buyers should start with if they want a balanced feature set without moving too far up the price ladder.
- EX-L: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make the Pilot feel more family-friendly, including leather, heated front seats, a sunroof, and a power tailgate. If you want the most satisfying mix of features and price, this is the one to target.
- Touring: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including navigation, rear-seat entertainment, premium audio, memory seating, and distinctive wheels. It makes sense if you plan to keep passengers entertained and want the most upscale Pilot experience.
The safety content notes that the Pilot was a Top Safety Pick last year, but it had not yet been subjected to the newer small-overlap frontal-impact test.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 769 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,619.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $10,819 sits slightly below last year's $11,200.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale gains may be limited unless you buy well, keep the vehicle in strong condition, and avoid overpaying now. The Pilot’s practical appeal should help support demand, but depreciation remains part of the ownership picture.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot safe?
The Pilot receives an overall rating of 4 stars from NHTSA, and the IIHS called it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is designed to help disperse crash energy away from the passenger compartment. The Pilot also includes a basic reversing camera, but the safety tech suite is limited compared with newer family SUVs. The review notes that the model had not yet been subjected to the newer small-overlap frontal-impact test, so that remains a caveat for shoppers who want the latest crash-test coverage.
Should I buy a 2014 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its practical, space-first design and strong family utility.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,526, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,819 average.
- It remains a spacious, 3-row, 8-passenger family SUV with a familiar formula.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced option with strong utility and proven owner satisfaction, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you can spend more and want to compare against a slightly newer model year, the 2015 is worth a look, but the 2014 remains the more budget-friendly buy.
