CarGurus Analysis: 2014 GMC Yukon XL

Why it stands out
The 2014 GMC Yukon XL stands out as a big, truck-based SUV built around space and capability. It was over a foot longer than the regular Yukon, and most of that extra length went into the wheelbase to improve passenger- and cargo-carrying ability. The second-generation design also used a solid rear axle, which gave it a truck-like ride and a high cargo floor, but it remained a practical choice for buyers who needed a large vehicle that could haul people and gear.
For 2014, the Yukon XL’s standard 5.3L V8 engine and available 6.2L V8 in Denali trim gave it a straightforward powertrain lineup, while the Denali also added magnetic ride control suspension, 20-inch aluminum wheels, an upgraded Bose audio system, and a chrome grille. The model’s appeal was broadened by useful equipment such as navigation through OnStar, and by the fact that all 2009 GMC Yukon XL models had already received a six-speed automatic transmission, which carried into this generation’s later years. Buyers looking at a 2014 Yukon XL could also appreciate that the heavy-duty Yukon XL 2500 was dropped for this model year, leaving the standard-duty versions as the focus.
Its strengths are clear: generous interior room, strong towing-and-hauling roots, and a range of trims that could be configured from practical to upscale. The tradeoff is that the truck-based layout brings a harsher ride than car-based crossovers, and the older technology in this generation can feel dated compared with newer SUVs.

These are great now they are coming down in price. For the most part the GMT900 platform is rock solid. There are some quirky things that come with this platform, nothing major. Make sure to keep up on the maintenance and ensure all fluids are full. I’ve had 3 units Silverado, Tahoe and Yukon xl combined mileage around 500k. By far the lowest cost used vehicle to own. The only serious bad thing about these and reason for 3 stars is the body. GM didn’t use any rust preventative or e-coated panels anywhere on these. Rust forms in the rockers and wheel openings. I know I mentioned maintenance above but make sure to keep up on maintenance and oil changes by 5k miles regardless of what the oil life monitor says. Change tout the battery every couple of years, the accessories are power hungry and kill batteries.

How much does the 2014 GMC Yukon XL cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,723 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,723.09 |
| Year-Round High | $12,264.58 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,946 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.23% |
Prices have softened 10.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 409 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $10,723.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 GMC Yukon XL a good car?
The 2014 GMC Yukon XL is a practical choice if you want a full-size SUV built around space, toughness, and straightforward utility, and the user rating is 3.5/5.
Its truck-based chassis and solid rear axle support the kind of rugged character that fits hauling people and cargo, while the long-wheelbase layout gives you more passenger and cargo room than the regular Yukon. The tradeoff is that you should expect a truck-like ride and a high cargo floor, so it makes the most sense if utility matters more to you than crossover-like comfort.
With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 GMC Yukon XL reliable?
The 2014 GMC Yukon XL is built on a traditional truck-based platform with a solid rear axle, which supports its rugged, straightforward character. It was designed around durability and utility, and the six-speed automatic across the lineup helped modernize the driving experience.
That said, its size, age, and truck-based layout mean you should expect used-vehicle wear to matter more than brochure specs. For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying one with deferred maintenance or hidden condition issues, so a careful pre-purchase check matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 GMC Yukon XL?
At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body condition, alignment, and signs of past repair. Because this is a large, truck-based SUV, focus on how it drives, how the cargo area and rear structure present, and whether the vehicle shows evidence of heavy use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 GMC Yukon XL?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 409 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,723.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?
The current average of $10,723 sits slightly below last year's $11,946.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably today. If you plan to sell later, the Yukon XL’s resale value will likely depend heavily on mileage, condition, and whether the vehicle has a clean history. A well-kept example should hold up better than one with accident history or visible wear, especially because buyers in this segment tend to be selective.
Should I buy a 2014 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
The 2014 makes sense if you want the long-wheelbase Yukon XL formula and you’re focused on value in today’s market. If you’re price-sensitive, this year is worth a close look because the market has softened, but you should be especially selective about condition and history before you buy.
