CarGurus Analysis: 2014 GMC Terrain

Summary
With 791 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,022, 27.1% of 2014 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 GMC Terrain 4.71 / 5 stars.
58.5% of 2014 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 GMC Terrain stands out as a compact SUV that blends a roomy cabin with a comfortable, easygoing character. It was part of the first generation, and that generation’s strengths included a practical interior and a reputation for good safety, with the 2014 model earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For shoppers who want a small SUV that feels substantial inside, the Terrain’s space and comfort are central to its appeal.
This model year is also notable because it was the first-generation Terrain’s first year with the 3.6-liter V6 engine, which replaced the earlier 3.0-liter V6. That engine made 301 horsepower and is the one the guide recommends for buyers considering a first-generation Terrain. The 2014 Terrain also appears on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s list of good used cars for teen drivers, which adds to its family-friendly image.
There are important tradeoffs, though. The first-generation Terrain’s standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder and earlier 3.0-liter V6 were both associated with serious reliability issues, and the guide specifically advises avoiding those engines. Cargo space is another limitation, since the Terrain does not match the room offered by some rivals. Even so, the 2014 GMC Terrain can be appealing for buyers who value a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin, and the stronger V6 powertrain.

Amazing. Love it. Easy handling. Great acceleration. Great gas mileage. Very roomy. Lots of bells and whistles. Comfortable. Great sound system. Very accommodating. Would buy three more of this model if I could. Very good looking. Cant say enough. Truly great value for the money. You cant go wrong with this SUV.

Reviewed a 2014 GMC SLE2 AWD on Feb 10, 2015
The stability and traction control combine with the AWD to make this a very good handling and surefooted vehicle. The high strength steel frame and front, side, and head curtain airbags give a good feeling of safety as well. The mileage is good too, so fuel costs aren't too high. Plenty of room for me (6'5") and the rest of the family when we go on trips- I would recommend it!

How much does the 2014 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,096 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,088.53 |
| Year-Round High | $9,037.69 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,039 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.44% |
Prices have softened 10.44% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 805 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare across price and condition. If you find a listing below $8,088.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — the 4.71/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the Terrain for its spaciousness, smooth handling, and great value for money, and they also call out comfort and economy as recurring strengths. If you want a compact SUV that feels roomy and easygoing for everyday driving, this model year fits that use case well. With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable everyday use, with praise for comfort, economy, and a trouble-free ownership experience. That said, you should still treat any used example as a case-by-case purchase, because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on maintenance history and how well the vehicle has been cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 GMC Terrain?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on the body, suspension, and interior condition, since those areas can reveal how the vehicle was treated. Focus on maintenance records and overall wear so you can judge whether the asking price matches the vehicle’s actual condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 GMC Terrain?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 805 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,088.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $8,096 sits slightly below last year's $9,039.
That softer pricing suggests the Terrain has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned to limit further value loss. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a roomy, comfortable compact SUV and you can verify condition carefully, the 2014 is the primary path to consider. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you can also compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of price, history, and overall condition.
