Why it stands out
The 2014 Chevrolet Volt stands out as an early, unconventional take on electrified driving. It operates as a pure electric vehicle up to about 40 miles, then the gas engine generator kicks in to charge the battery, which powers the motors. Chevrolet described it as more of an electric vehicle than a plug-in hybrid because the electric motors, not the gasoline engine, sent power to the wheels. That setup gave it a distinctive character and made it appealing to buyers who wanted short-range electric commuting without giving up the flexibility of a gas engine.
For 2014, the Volt’s appeal also came from its efficiency and everyday usability. It had a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery, 149 horsepower, and 273 pound-feet of torque, along with 37 mpg when the range-extender was active and 93 MPGe in all-electric mode. It was front-wheel drive only, used a single-speed direct-drive transmission, and required premium fuel. Standard equipment included a seven-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, USB connectivity, and a 60 MB hard drive with 30 MB of space for music, while available features included a rear camera, heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, and leather seats.
At the same time, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt was not especially roomy or luxurious. It was a hatchback with seating for four, and the source notes cramped rear seats, a small cargo area, and cheap interior materials. Even so, it remained attractive as a commuter-focused used car thanks to its strong efficiency, smooth and quiet operation, and the unusual ability to cover daily driving on electricity while still having gasoline backup when needed.

I love this car. Chevrolet did a great job designing it. Great gas mileage, up to 68 mpg and battery last 48 to 50 miles. This car is incredible and I wish I would have purchased one in 2014. Does not disappoint.

Great commuter car. Very inexpensive maintenance. Great safety features; front end collision warning, full airbag coverage, traction controls. 3 years free onstar. Satellite radio. Heated seats. Nice remote features; auto all windows down, key proximity unlock, auto start for pre-cooling or preheating. Nice climate control system. A little noisy because of the hatchback. Minimal storage space unless you fold the rear seats down.

Pulls great, feels like an electric car but when engine kicks in you hear it run. Very comfy inside. Only bad side is outdated Bluetooth software and Camara. Not bad for the price.

How much does the 2014 Chevrolet Volt cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,609 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,204 |
| Year-Round High | $7,835 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,695 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.12% |
Prices have softened 1.12% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 135 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt a good car?
Generally — the 2014 Chevrolet Volt earns a 4.38/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its impressive gas mileage, smooth and quiet performance, and commuter-friendly efficiency. The model’s electric-first driving character also stands out for buyers who want short-range electric commuting with gas backup for longer trips. For shoppers focused on everyday usability and efficiency, that combination makes it a compelling used-car pick, and 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
In owner feedback, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt is described as having good reliability, especially for electric-mode commuting, and it’s also associated with trouble-free day-to-day use. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used car you can count on for regular commuting without a lot of drama. For long-term ownership, you should still pay close attention to battery-related condition and overall maintenance history, since those are the biggest risk areas on a used electrified vehicle.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Volt?
At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership history before you get too far into the process. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on overall condition, since a used Volt’s value depends heavily on how well it has been maintained. You should also pay close attention to signs of wear in the cabin and cargo area, because comfort and practicality are already part of the model’s tradeoffs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Volt?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting deep bargain-bin pricing across the board.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 135 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,204, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt's resale value?
The current average of $7,609 sits slightly below last year's $7,695.
That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, the current trend suggests you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been cared for. A clean example with strong documentation should hold up better than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Volt or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should buy the 2014 if you want a commuter-focused Volt with strong owner satisfaction and you can find a clean, well-priced example. If you’re especially price-sensitive, it also makes sense to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained car rather than the newest badge, since condition and deal quality matter more than a small model-year difference here.
