Why it stands out
The 2014 Chevrolet Volt stands out as an early example of electrified driving that still feels distinctive today. It operates as a pure electric vehicle up to about 40 miles, then the gas engine generator kicks in to charge the battery, which powers the motors. Chevrolet described it as more of an electric vehicle than a plug-in hybrid because the electric motors, not the gasoline engine, sent power to the wheels. That unusual setup gave the Volt a clear identity: it was built to deliver short-distance electric commuting without the anxiety of being limited to battery-only range.
For 2014, the Volt’s appeal also came from its efficiency and everyday usability. It had a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery, 149 horsepower, and 273 pound-feet of torque, along with 37 mpg when the range-extender was active and 93 MPGe in all-electric mode. It was front-wheel drive only, used a single-speed direct-drive transmission, and required premium fuel. The cabin was a hatchback with seating for four, and standard equipment included a seven-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, USB connectivity, and a 60 MB hard drive with 30 MB of space for music. Available features such as a rear camera, heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, and leather seats helped give it a more upscale feel than many economy-minded alternatives.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Volt’s rear seat was cramped, its cargo area was small, and some owners have noted uncomfortable base-model seats and a few outdated tech features. Even so, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt remains appealing for buyers who want a compact commuter with strong fuel economy, smooth and quiet operation, and the ability to drive on electricity for short trips while still having gasoline backup for longer ones.

I love this car. Chevrolet did a great job designing it. Great gas mileage, up to 68 mpg and battery last 48 to 50 miles. This car is incredible and I wish I would have purchased one in 2014. Does not disappoint.

Great commuter car. Very inexpensive maintenance. Great safety features; front end collision warning, full airbag coverage, traction controls. 3 years free onstar. Satellite radio. Heated seats. Nice remote features; auto all windows down, key proximity unlock, auto start for pre-cooling or preheating. Nice climate control system. A little noisy because of the hatchback. Minimal storage space unless you fold the rear seats down.

Pulls great, feels like an electric car but when engine kicks in you hear it run. Very comfy inside. Only bad side is outdated Bluetooth software and Camara. Not bad for the price.

How much does the 2014 Chevrolet Volt cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,556 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,201.41 |
| Year-Round High | $7,847.77 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,709 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.98% |
Prices have softened 1.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 151 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $7,201.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt a good car?
Generally — the 4.38/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its impressive gas mileage, smooth and quiet performance, and commuter-friendly efficiency. The review summary also highlights good reliability and the Volt’s appeal as a practical daily driver, while noting that base-model comfort and older tech can be weaker points. For you, that makes it a smart fit if you want a compact commuter with strong efficiency and a distinctive electric-first setup. With 27.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to good reliability, dependable everyday use, and a car many owners feel comfortable counting on for commuting. That kind of feedback matters most if you plan to keep the car for a while and want something that can handle regular use without drama. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the powertrain concept and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance and no hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Volt?
At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or signs of heavy commuting use. Focus on overall condition, seat comfort, interior wear, and how well the car’s features and electronics work, since owner feedback points to some comfort and tech shortcomings.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Volt?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 151 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,201.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Chevrolet Volt's resale value?
The current average of $7,556 sits slightly below last year's $7,709.
That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a particularly clean, well-documented example. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot because buyers tend to pay more for cars that look cared for and have fewer surprises. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, but the recent price dip suggests you should expect steady, not rising, resale performance.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Volt or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a used Volt with strong owner approval, good efficiency, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities, the 2014 is a sensible primary choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you should compare nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
