CarGurus Analysis: 2014 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,438 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,104, 31.3% of 2014 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW 3 Series 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
55.4% of 2014 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sports sedan that still leans hard into the qualities that made the nameplate famous: deft handling, sublime steering, and silky engines in a clean four-door body. It also has the kind of road manners that make it easy to appreciate in everyday driving, with punchy acceleration, solid and reassuring brakes, and handling that stays flat and confident without sending too many jolts through the cabin on rougher roads.
That said, the 2014 BMW 3 Series is not presented as an untouchable benchmark anymore. The source notes that newer rivals have gotten close to, and in some cases surpassed, what the BMW offers, so shoppers cross-shopping this car should not assume it is automatically the best choice in the class. Even so, it remains appealing for buyers who want a refined, engaging sedan with a strong driving character and a long-standing reputation for getting the basics right.

Diesel review only, I’ve never tested the gasoline models. The BMW 328D diesel xdrive is the most fuel efficient internal combustion engine powered all wheel drive vehicle. Go ahead and try to find another more efficient, you won’t be able to. For Highway it will get you into the 52 MPG range stock, and with a some modification into the 56 range, City is still high 40’s. It has all the creature comfort’s you could want, and is a quite, comfortable ride! Blasts through snow and ice especially with winter tires, this is a great car for all regions. Car is plenty spacious for four and has a large trunk (boot ) storage. Find yourself one!

How much does the 2014 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,097 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,800 |
| Year-Round High | $10,212 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,203 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.03% |
Prices have softened 1.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,428 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2014 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.79/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, modern styling, and safety features. The feedback also points to comfort, fuel efficiency in the diesel model, and a spacious interior as recurring positives.
For you, that means this model year fits best if you want a refined sedan with strong everyday appeal and a clear emphasis on driving enjoyment. Even so, newer rivals have closed the gap, so it makes the most sense if you value the BMW character more than chasing the newest benchmark.
Good and great deals account for 31.7% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers describing the car as a model they enjoy living with over time. The expert notes also reinforce that sense of durability by highlighting BMW’s generous no-cost maintenance plan, which covers scheduled checkups and replacements for items like oil, wipers, brake discs, and pads.
That said, used buyers should still watch for maintenance history and wear items, because long-term ownership costs can rise if the car was not serviced consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, service records, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim and options you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base, Luxury, Sport, and M Sport are the four distinct trim lines, and the Sport and M Sport versions emphasize more aggressive body styling, larger wheels, and stiffer suspensions. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting if you care about the sportier appearance and chassis tuning.
- Powertrain: You get a range of engines, including 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinders in the 320i and 328i, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six in the 335i, and a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder in the 328d. The diesel is the efficiency play, while the 335i is the strongest choice if you want the smoothest and most powerful feel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive brake lamps, automatic brake drying, and BMW Assist eCall. Blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and a basic alarm system are not standard, so you should check carefully for those features if they matter to you.
- Infotainment: The car uses BMW’s iDrive controller with a large color screen, quick-loading menus, Bluetooth streaming audio, USB connectivity, and BMW Apps support. An automated parallel parking system, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, and a bird’s-eye camera view are available options.
- Fuel efficiency: The 328d is described as promising an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating, while the tester returned 17 mpg in mostly city driving.
Which 2014 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Luxury, Sport, and M Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it is the easiest trim to outgrow if you want the more expressive styling and firmer setup that define the 3 Series experience.
- Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without leaning into the sportiest appearance or suspension tuning.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more aggressive body styling and larger wheels while keeping the car’s core driving character intact.
- M Sport: Pick this if you want the most aggressive look and the stiffest suspension tuning among the listed trims.
The safety content also notes that blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and a basic alarm system are not standard, so verify those items on any used example you consider.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,428 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,800, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $10,097 sits slightly below last year's $10,203.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing discipline matters: a well-kept car with strong documentation should be easier to move than one with gaps in service history or visible wear.
The model’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who prioritize driving feel and brand reputation. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series safe?
The BMW 3 Series didn’t fare too well in small-overlap crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it still earns five-star ratings on government crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive brake lamps, automatic brake drying in wet weather, and BMW Assist eCall, which can dial 911 after a crash. You should also note that a backup camera is not standard, and blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and a basic alarm system are not standard either.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says the 3 Series still delivers the classic formula of deft handling, sublime steering, and silky engines, even as rivals have closed the gap.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,317, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,097 average.
- It shifts to a sedan-only lineup with a tighter, more focused identity.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and a broad set of listings to compare, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you are willing to spend more for the next model year’s sedan-only focus, the 2015 is the cleaner alternative; otherwise, the 2014 remains the smarter pick for price-sensitive shoppers who still want the classic 3 Series feel.
