CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 1,055 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,178, 32.7% of 2020 Hyundai Konas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Hyundai Kona 4.68 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
73.6% of 2020 Kona models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Hyundai Kona stands out in the subcompact crossover class because it is one of the smallest vehicles you can buy with all-wheel drive, yet it still offers the higher driving position and lifted stance that crossover shoppers want. It also brings a generous list of convenience and safety features for the segment, and Hyundai says the 2020 model’s major changes are a new trim level and more standard driver assists. That combination helps explain why the Kona is distinctive: it aims to deliver the practicality buyers expect from a crossover without giving up the playful character that makes it appealing.
What really defines the 2020 Hyundai Kona, though, is its personality. Hyundai describes it as the best to drive among subcompact crossovers rather than the best value, and the test-drive notes back that up with praise for its stylish design and fun-to-drive nature. The tradeoff is that it is cramped, the interior disappoints, and cargo space is limited, so buyers looking for maximum room will need to look elsewhere. Still, for shoppers who care more about on-road performance, exterior style, and a well-equipped feel than outright space, the Kona has a strong and memorable appeal.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials feel hard and disappointing, and cargo space is limited. In practical terms, this is a better fit if you want a small crossover with personality and a well-equipped feel than if you need maximum room.
Good and great deals account for 31.7% of listings, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Kona’s good features and fuel efficiency over the long term. The expert notes also support that impression by emphasizing Hyundai’s long warranty coverage and three included oil changes.
That said, used buyers should still watch for maintenance history and wear items, especially because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how well the previous owner cared for the car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a car with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on interior condition, cargo-area wear, and signs that the car was used hard, since the cabin quality and space limitations are already known weak points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you need the SEL for proximity entry, auto up/down windows, vanity mirrors, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted rear windows, blind-spot monitoring, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD radio. The SEL Plus adds wireless charging, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity, while the Limited and Ultimate add more upscale equipment and the turbo engine.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic. The Limited and Ultimate get a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft plus a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, AWD is optional, and AWD models get an independent rear suspension.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking comes standard on every Kona, along with lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor. The Ultimate adds pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. The Kona does not come with front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
- Infotainment: The base model has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SEL Plus adds Blue Link connectivity and wireless charging, while the Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert notes say the 1.6T AWD is rated at 26 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, while the 2.0 AWD returns 26/30/28. FWD models are rated at 30 mpg combined and up to 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, but it already gives you the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the everyday features many buyers will want, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
- SEL Plus: This is the smart upgrade if you want more tech and comfort, including wireless charging, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity.
- Limited: This trim is the one to choose if you want the turbo engine and leather upholstery, along with a more upscale feel.
- Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including the sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,061 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.20% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,642, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,133 sits slightly below last year's $16,485.
That decline suggests the Kona has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer pricing environment than before. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average.
The Kona’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who value style and driving enjoyment. That can help resale value hold up better than you might expect in a small crossover with limited space.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona scored five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, plus a four-star rollover rating. It also earned a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking comes standard on every Kona, along with lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor. The Ultimate adds pedestrian detection, and the expert notes say that system scored lower in pedestrian detection than another vehicle. The Kona also lacks front knee airbags and rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,758, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,133 average.
- It adds a Night Edition with black 18-inch wheels and gloss black accents.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated lineup and cosmetic changes, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative.
