Overview

A compromise between an SUV and a compact hatchback, the Matrix originally set the current trend for crossover vehicles. The 2009 Toyota Matrix gets a styling update to make it more coupe-like, with a wider rear end, lower ride height, and a more angular sloping roof. Though overall dimensions have not changed, internal configuration and seat tracks have adjusted interior space. Passenger room climbs from 96 to 114 cubic feet, while the cargo area now holds 61.5 cubic feet.
Available in Base, S, and XRS trims, the 2009 Toyota Matrix offers two four-cylinder engines. Base and S come standard with a 132-hp, 1.8-liter I4, while the XRS gets the 158-hp, 2.4-liter I4. Gone is the 170-hp engine from last year. Base trims feature either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual, while the S and XRS work with the manual or a 5-speed automatic with manual mode. Also new for 2009 is an AWD version of this front-wheel drive wagon, only available in the S trim. This is paired with the 2.4 engine, but only with a 4-speed automatic. New sport seats, more storage compartments, a new JBL sound system, and new touchscreen navigation are some other additions to the 2009 Matrix package. A more solid ride and turn radius is helped by the new double wishbone rear suspension in the S AWD and XRS, replacing the rear torsion beam suspension.
The stylish wagon seats four or five in two rows, with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats able to fold flat. Both the S and XRS include a fold-flat front passenger seat as well. Base models start minimally, in keeping with the budget-minded ethos, while the S and XRS offer up power features, a CD/MP3 player, remote entry and cruise control. These trims are outfitted with a sporty body kit to appeal to a younger male audience. This includes foglights, underbody front and rear spoilers, rocker moldings, chrome accents (XRS), and sport seats. The XRS adds larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, and standard traction and stability control.
Unlike the Corollla, on which it's based, the 2009 Matrix comes with 4-wheel disc brakes on all trims. This is in addition to 4-wheel ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows. The Matrix maintains Toyota's reputation for reliability and safety, but hopes its sexier profile will expand its target consumer. Early reports say the changes are minimal, and the XRS performance won't wow drivers, but interior space is comfortable, roomy, and versatile.

We have the base Matrix with Touring Package. Including: 4 spd Auto Transmission, Tachometer, Power Windows & Locks, Key less Entry, Tilt-telescopic steering wheel, Air, Cruise, CD/Mp3/WMA Player with Auxiliary input, Heated Mirrors, Height adjustable driver's seat, scuff plates with Matrix etching, Rear-mounted spoiler, fog lights, hood deflector, splash guards, color keyed door handles, Rust Check included. Acceleration in moderate-good, but nothing like our old Vibe GT, (that car would go 80 Km/h in 1st gear and it was a 6 speed manual). Braking and handling are both very good-excellent. It's a Toyota, so the build quality in never an issue. The appearance, in my opinion, has vastly improved. Where the Vibe was my initial favorite, with the Matrix seeming to conservative (on their inception), the Matrix now wins (in all avenues, for that matter) hands down. Mileage, as of yet is not as good as promised, but we'll see as the engine breaks-in properly. Again, being a Toyota, it is not foreseen that there will be any maintenance issues. This car is definitely fun to drive, the suspension feels tight and easily manageable on these horrible Nova Scotia roads, but not too harsh. This is a perfect car for anyone who has one or two small children. There is plenty of room in the rear passenger cabin to put a booster seat for our oldest, and a "Latch System" removable car seat for our infant. Then, though there is little-to-no no room left in the back seat for passengers, there is plenty of room in the hatch back for all of our supplies for the weekend trips to Grammy and Grampys' house. (i.e. Diapper bag, luggage for 4 people, toys for the baby and toys for big sister and even Daddy)

This is a great car. We have one now 2007 that is 200k miles and still running. Very minimal maintenance. Good value.

I like that this car has surround airbags even for the backseats. The XRS package has racing suspension and high-performance tires that really improve the handling but doesn't seem to 'harden' the ride much, if at all. It has above average efficiency and enough room to carry more than you'd expect.
