Following the debut of the new Cummins turbodiesel engine in 2007, the heavy-duty Ram 3500 receives minimal changes for this model year. A new SXT trim is exclusive to the Mega Cab, replacing the SLT finish on this extended body style. Reviewers have commented that a lot changes when truck buyers graduate from the Ram 2500 to the 3500 dually. There are both positives and negatives. The main benefit: towing power. When the truck is fitted with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel, which most buyers select, towing maxes out at an impressive 16,350 pounds. However, the addition of the two rear wheels and tighter suspension firms up the highway ride to the point of eventual discomfort for some, and the 3500 is not exactly capable of easily navigating tight streets and thick traffic. Like the 2500, the Ram 3500 is available with two powerplant options. A 5.7-liter V8 comes standard, making 345 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is included with this engine. Optional on the ST and SLT, and standard on the Laramie, is a five-speed automatic. The optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel is an inline six generating 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, buyers have a choice between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
