Overview

The V70R is the Volvo wagon that truly has it all. If you are the type who really only feels safe in an all-wheel-drive vehicle, this set of wheels should more than satisfy. Safe travel is a given with Volvo, and the AWD only increases the good feeling, especially for drivers in snow-prone climes. That feature combined with the Swedish automaker's legendary crash-protection systems finds V70 owners rolling out of their driveways confident that they will reach their destination safely. The patented Side-Impact Protection System and Whiplash Protection System lead the way, joined by front and side-curtain airbags for both driver and passenger, innovative seatbelt pretensioners, contoured seats that keep occupants from sliding out from beneath the belt, and padded headrests. On top of that, there's simply a good amount of protective metal. European and American crash tests returned top results in frontal crash tests, and excellent results for the side crash test. The turbo-charged 2.5-liter, 300 horsepower engine is available with either the standard 6-speed manual overdrive or the 6-speed automatic overdrive transmission. You can expect to get 18 miles per gallon around town and 24 to 25 on the highway. Leather comes standard, an upgrade to finest-quality leather was available. Every V70R came with an audio system featuring both a cassette player and CD player. An optional navigation system is available. User reviews were generally positive, reflecting a safe car that was fun to drive. But one owner declared his V70R a total lemon, adding that he had traded it in after six miserable months of ownership.

What an awesome and good looking wagon. It was available with manual transmission. Mine has been dead reliable. The only drawback is the turning radius --- but, seriously, that's not a big issue for someone looking for a stealth speed wagon.

Not as fast as I thought is what I really mean. Quick don't get me wrong, but not as fast as the R badge makes it sound. Otherwise very practical and solid.

Overall, this is a nice family car. We purchased this car due to Volvo's safety record, but the performance and handling makes this car more than your traditional family Volvo Wagon. In utilizing the Advanced setting, the suspension and transmission are truly responsive, but the car tends to "plow" (under steer) upon entering hard turns. This problem became substantially better after changing from the OEM tires to harder sidewall tires. We have had several minor items come up, but these have been fixed under warranty, although I am not happy with some of the build quality items. (Plastic feeling, not solid.) I like the styling of the car, although the front bottom lip of the spoiler tends to get stuck on parking bumpers, and we once "removed" the entire front bumper cover on one of these parking bumpers. (This has since been fixed by using metal tec screws.) Gas mileage is extremely poor for a family wagon - 16-21 mpg, (City/Highway) but I do have a heavy right foot, so that may help perpetuate that particular problem...... In short, it is a nice family wagon, with some extra pep when you want to have some fun.

Performance- stock this car was great, power was always available, no real turbo lag issues off the line but sometimes power was not there in the mod range, with bsr custom ecu and filter 50 more hp was added and made the car 10 times better handling was incredible with the 4-c adjustable suspension, braking was throw you through the window good with the 4 piston brembos in all four corners and upgraded viva performance drilled rotors and pads Build Quality- interior and exterior held up well, no squeaks or rattles, suspension began to ride harder over time though. Engine had a lot of reliabaility issues, turbo pipe constantly cracked, radiator was always dropping out (had to replace three times) and the a/c gave up the ghost. Cost of Ownership- as always with a foreign car, repairs are costly. The car seemed to start having issues after the waranty let up so reapirs were extremely expensive at times. MPG was abou 18, which was good considering the spirited driving Fun Factor- despite the reilability issues, this car was a 10 for fun , had a ball with it
