2005 marked the second year that the V70 R held 300 horses under its hood. This certainly satisfied the speed demons among devotees of Volvo's most popular model. The car's estimated fuel economy is 18 city/24 highway, just a bit below the 19/26 on the 257-horsepower T5 trim. Power difference aside, the R offered a couple more perks for its higher price: All-Wheel Drive and leather seats. Buyers also had a choice of transmission: the standard 6-speed manual overdrive or the optional 5-speed automatic. With air bags, ABS, whiplash protection, and side-beams, the V70 R is already a very safe mode of transportation. Another standard item on the R (as well as the T5) is Volvo's Dynamic Stability Traction Control. Enhanced by the Active Yaw Control, which aids with directional stability in a lateral skid, this wonderful technology makes this car that much more likely to keep its occupants unscathed. A multi-link rear suspension and front and rear anti-roll bars improve the already exceptional handling, as does speed-sensitive steering. In their reviews, 2005 V70 R owners raved about the car's acceleration, sporty looks, and responsive suspension. Some of the more passionate responders contended that no SUV could hold a candle to this special wagon. But it wasn't 100 percent positive; a few people reported a problem with a blind spot out the back window.
