Having just gone through a redesign in 2005, the only change to the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder is a new leather seat option for the SE trim. The recent makeover for this truck-based SUV doubled the Pathfinder's sales the previous year. Three trims, the S, SE, and LE come in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and a 4.0-liter, 270-hp V6 engine. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. There is also an SE Off-Road model, which features a stronger suspension, performance shocks, skid plates, and Hill Descent Control, which controls downhill speed so you don't have to continually step on the brakes. Built on a Titan platform, the 2006 Pathfinder is able to tow up to 6000 pounds and comes standard with a tow hitch. Base models get power locks and windows, air conditioning, ABS brakes, a stability system, and front and side airbags. As you move up the line, you add power adjustable seats and leather upholstery. A DVD system, running boards, and sunroof are all optional. The 2006 Pathfinder features three rows of seats. The third row folds into the floor, the second split folds, and even the front passenger seat folds to accommodate long objects. There are two in-floor compartments under the middle row, and tie-downs and nets in the trunk. The window in the tailgate opens independently of the door for alternative loading options.
Acceleration is top-notch on the 2006 Pathfinder, say drivers. The power packs a punch, and yet this mid-size SUV handles smoothly and not at all like a truck. The style is attractive, and the interior room is comfortable except for the third row, where adults should never sit. There are some reports of problems with the brakes and a dashboard squeak, but mostly owners complain about the lousy gas mileage.
