Overview
For 2006, GMC took the Canyon and tweaked the shocks, suspension, and power steering. In addition, the Canyon got Extended and Crew Cab versions of the SLT trim and a couple new exterior colors. This midsize pickup truck offers 26 trims, all of which have 4 doors. Standard Cab trims can seat 2 and Extended and Crew Cab trims seat anywhere from 4-6.
As for standard engines, the Canyon offers either a standard 2.8 L, 175 hp I4 engine or a 3.5 L, 220 hp I5 engine with either 4 speed automatic or 5 speed manual transmission, depending on the trim. All trims come in 2WD and 4WD versions. As for gas mileage, you can count on around 18 mpg in city and 24 on the highway. Maximum towing capacity across trims generally amounts to somewhere between 3000 and 4000 lbs.
Overall, drivers consider the 2006 GMC Canyon as a quality pickup with solid handling. However, most reviewers agree that the Canyon could really use a V6 or V8 engine, higher towing capacity, and better interior materials. Pretty much anyone will say that while the 2006 GMC Canyon does well enough in on and offroad performance, it has fallen behind the times and will need to catch up to the competition.

Performance - could use a bit more power or a different transmition gearing ratio, Factory susspension is garbage ( I reconmend KYB gas shocks) Has good wieght distribution which makes it great for offroad. handles well even lifted. Build Quality - Its an American make...lol do i need to same more Appearance - looks great inside and out, verry durrable interior, agressive body lines. Cost of Ownership - Good on gas everything is great except for the suspension Fun factor - Its fun due to the manual transmition and offroad capabilities

I like the ride of the car, the steering is nice. I like the color, and the engine and transmission seem to be pretty reliable. However, the paint quality is poor, the sheet metal is thin and susceptable to easily being dented. The gas mileage is fair. The maintenance cost is pretty low for now, and the four wheel drive works well, with plenty of low end torque to spare.

At 600 miles, my 2006 Canyon runs quiet, has good suspension, and the 3.5 gives good acceleration when needed.
