The acclaimed Lexus GS 430 received no changes for 2005. However, this was the final year before additional redesigns would lead to a third generation of the sports sedan. The GS 430 had replaced the 400, and the series still featured a 3.0 liter V-6 model. The GS embodied the Japanese automaker's effort balance sport and luxury in one attractive and reliable package. Critics had begun to suggest that the arrival of the 430 actually pulled the GS away from its well-established sporting image. The GS certainly featured a powerful enough engine for any 3700 pound sedan. The 4.3 liter V-8 produced 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The GS lunges off the line to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, and turns the quarter mile in 14.2 seconds. The innovative Variable Valve Timing technology not only provides additional power, but also lowers emissions and improves fuel economy. However, the GS was still missing the 5-speed manual transmission that sport sedan enthusiasts had practically begged for. The buttons on the steering wheel that shifted the gears were really not an adequate substitute. GS owners opinion was split about the nature of the car. Along with the expected Lexus refinements like wood trim and leather seating, the GS 430's interior felt like a sports sedan. The backlit gauges gave the instrument panel a sharp and dynamic appearance, and the wide windshild provides excellent foward visibility. There are some blind spots to the rear, with the view obstructed by large rear headrests and the wide C-pillars. On the road, the silenced ride and softened suspension distracted from a true sport experience. However, such criticism requires one to dig rather deep. If the GS 430 can't provide a stiff ride or lively engine noise, its probably just because the GS is a Lexus. There were no questions about safety, reliability, or value in its class.
