CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 521 currently listed for sale and an average price of $47,990.00, 28.2% of 2022 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Tesla Model S 4.29 / 5 stars.
83.9% of 2022 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Tesla Model S stands out as a software-driven luxury electric sedan that helped define the modern EV era. By this point in its life cycle, it had already built a reputation for impressive range, advanced technology, and sports car-style acceleration, while still benefiting from Tesla’s constant over-the-air updates. It also remained distinctive for its minimalist approach, including the lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which reinforces how differently it is designed from many conventional luxury sedans.
For 2022, the Model S was part of the Palladium refresh introduced in 2021, so it featured the updated interior with a yoke steering wheel and the overhauled powertrain that brought increased efficiency, range, and power. The lineup included the dual-motor Long Range version and the tri-motor Plaid, with the Plaid delivering 1,020 horsepower and the Long Range rated at 405 miles of range. Standard equipment was generous, with vegan leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive air suspension, a glass roof, wireless phone charging, a premium 22-speaker, 560-watt audio system, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot monitor.
That combination makes the 2022 Model S appealing to buyers who want long-range electric driving, quick charging capability, and a cabin packed with technology. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: Tesla’s build quality has been criticized, and the yoke steering wheel remains a polarizing feature. Some owners also point to rear seat space and the lack of physical controls as practical compromises, but for shoppers prioritizing performance and innovation, the 2022 Model S remains one of the most distinctive used EVs available.

the model S Tesla is not only a beautiful car, but also a superb auto. I think one of the biggest EV advantages of the Tesla models, is numerous locations of Super Charging Stations, which enable 300 to 600 miles of charge per hour of charge time at only .35 cents per KW hr... and the FSD seems unbelievable amazing & accurate.

The car is not worth the cost. There is no foot room for the back seat rider. Back seat room is too cramped. Interior material is subpar for a luxury car. Yoke stirring wheel is not practical.

How much does the 2022 Tesla Model S cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $47,359 |
| Year-Round Low | $46,282.69 |
| Year-Round High | $49,081.52 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $46,669 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.48% |
Prices are up 1.48% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 531 listings available, which gives you a meaningful but not overwhelming pool to compare.
If you find a listing below $46,282.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Tesla Model S earns a 4.29/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its performance, technology, and speed, and many also like the extensive Supercharging network and futuristic design. For you, that makes it especially appealing if you want a software-driven luxury EV with long-range capability and a cabin that feels more advanced than conventional sedans. With 28.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, dependable ownership, and a car that many drivers feel they can count on over time. That matters for a used EV because strong owner confidence often reflects fewer day-to-day frustrations and better overall satisfaction with the ownership experience. For you, the main long-term risk is less about the powertrain concept and more about making sure the specific car has been cared for well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still review the history report carefully and confirm there are no hidden accident or title issues. Put the inspection focus on condition, especially the interior controls, steering setup, and any signs of wear that could affect daily usability. Because this model is so tech-heavy, you’ll want to make sure everything functions as expected before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 531 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.48% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $46,282.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $47,359 sits slightly above last year's $46,669.
That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A used Model S that stays in demand can be easier to move when you’re ready to trade in or list privately. Strong pricing also suggests buyers still value the combination of range, performance, and technology.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.48% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed Model S experience with strong owner satisfaction and a market that still shows healthy demand, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If your priority is stretching your budget, a nearby older year may be worth considering, but you should expect to trade some of the 2022’s market strength and updated appeal for a lower entry price.
