The 2000 Lexus LS 400 was last offering of the flagship's second generation. The entirely new 430 would emerge in 2001 and due to a larger engine, the LS would receive its first badge change in 11 years. The 2000 model only saw a few minor revisions: BrakeAssist was added to the optional Vehicle Skid Control system and child seat anchors were now standard equipment.
The LS was powered by a technology-assisted 4.0 liter four cam V-8, which generated 290 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Variable Valve Timing (plus intelligence) technology was employed for three benefits: more power, lower emissions, and better fuel efficiency. Now aided by VVT+i, the 4.0 liter engine could propel the 3800 pound LS from 0 to 60 in just 6.5 seconds, and through a quarter mile in just over 15. The second generation had brought a number of other performance improvements to the LS, including a five-speed automatic transmission, Vehicle Skid Control, and variable suspension. The rear wheel drive sedan's fuel efficiency was rated at 19/25 mpg. Prior improvements to the stock sound system had made it more tolerable, but it was still no comparison to the Nakamichi option. A mediocre stock system and a rather silly cup holder design were really the only things that mar the LS 400's interior experience. The careful ergonomic placement of controls complemented the fit and finish of the spacious cabin, and convenience and comfort features included an optional navigation system, power-(everything), digital displays, and heated/memory seats.
