The 2000 Lexus ES 300 was fitted with several new features, with convenience and safety considerations leading the way. Standard upgrades included electro-chromatic side and rearview mirrors and mirror settings added to the list of memory functions. The interior was available in three new colors, which some additional wood trim, and child seat bracket was installed in the back. New options included high-intensity discharge headlights, an interior air filter, and a Brake Assist feature for the Vehicle Skid Control system. Minor details like tail light coloring were also changed. Over the years, the ES had been incrementally gaining power. After first appearing with a modest 156 horses, the ES 300 had reached 210 by 2000. The latest bump was due to Variable Valve Timing technology. VVT-i was the second generation of the VVT technology pioneered by Toyota in 1991. Thanks to VVT-i, the 3.0 liter V-6 also improved fuel economy and lowered emissions. The ES traveled from o to 60 in eight seconds, and its fuel economy was rated at 19/26 mpg. While the ES had received a reputation as being a redecorated Toyota Camry, many drivers insisted that it was no longer the case. Lexus had made a considerable effort to differentiate the two cars, and by 2000 many reviewers suggested that the mission was accomplished. Those who test drove both commented that the Lexus featured finer tuned suspension, a quieter ride, and a greater abundance of luxury features. While the platform and parent company were the same, little resemblance remained.
