As the largest and heaviest sport-utility vehicle that had been introduced to date, the 2000 Excursion attracted reams of publicity, both positive and negative, upon its launch. The Excursion came off the line with a 5.4 liter overhead cam V-8 that delivered 255 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque; buyers could upgrade to a 6.8 liter overhead cam V10, with 310 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque, or go for even more power with turbodiesel options.
