In 1993, the Lexus LS 400 underwent the first significant revisions since its arrival in 1990. Larger brakes and tires were capped with new alloy wheels, and the exterior styling and trim received a slight facelift. The most noticeable exterior changes were different side moldings and a new grille. A passenger airbag and CFC-free air conditioning system were also new. After enduring years of critical feedback regarding bland road manners, Lexus responded with suspension and power steering adjustments aimed to bolster the LS 400's performance. The same 4.0 liter V-8 returned in 1993. This 32-valve DOHC engine provided the LS with 250 horsepower and 260 pound feet of torque. The 0-60 mph time still remained around eight seconds, and the quarter mile was reached in 16. Improved brakes steadily slowed the LS from 60 mph to a stop in just 120 feet. Many drivers and road testers did still not regard the LS as fun to drive, despite more responsive steering and the new option of a more road-aware suspension. The LS 400 remained a smooth and steady cruiser, just as it was designed to be. "Riding on a cloud" metaphors were frequently employed to describe the car's relationship with the road. Base price (and resale value) continued to gradually rise, but value in class still remained unquestioned. Many felt that the 18/23 mpg fuel efficiency was low, but certainly understandable for such a large and powerful sedan. By now, locating and buying parts for the first generation LS has become a bit of a struggle.
