Overview

Mazda designed its new MX-3 sports coupe to be a quick, nimble compact car that was also economical to own and maintain. And according to most drivers, the Japanese automaker easily achieved that goal. For its first year in production, the MX-3 was available in both a Base version and a more powerful GS model. The Base MX-3 came with an 88-horsepower, 1.6-liter four cylinder, while the GS version came with a 130-horsepower, 1.8-liter V6 that was the smallest V6 engine available in the industry. A five-speed manual overdrive transmission was standard for both versions, while a four-speed automatic was available as optional equipment. Standard features for the MX-3 in its initial year were fairly limited, and included bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, power exterior mirrors, 14-inch wheels, a rear window defroster, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo system. The GS added a rear spoiler, a tighter sport suspension, and alloy wheels. Options included air conditioning, power windows, and power door locks. Excellent, awesome, exciting, gorgeous, perfect, and cute were just some of the words drivers used to describe the MX-3. They also noted that it was reliable, comfortable, and great fun to drive. Negatives? Some drivers would have liked the sports coupe to have a little more power, but for the most part negative comments about the MX-3 were hard to come by.

Hands down, this is one of the best sports compacts of the 90's. With the GS trim, the world's smallest produced V6 engine (for the time) produces little powerbelow 3000 RPMs, but is very quick to get there. It is geared high, but don't think of it in a bad way; think of the 5th gear being a passing gear, but without having to shift! Handling is top of the line for the class, and the body looks so much more modern than what it actually is.

Well it is my friend's car, and it has lowering suspension, short shifter and exhaust mods. So it had a pretty nice (sporty) ride. There was something wrong with the engine though, cause it would have no power and then surge at 4000 RPM (he's gonna get that checked out), but overall it was pretty fun. The interior has cheap materials, but the exterior is quite sculptural, although his is rusty, too. Fun car, but modification is a must. :)

Acceleration is good, but could be better. Braking and handling are great. Build quality is good. Appearance on the interior is great. Older or abused models will need some work on upholstery. The outside looks great, but again older or abused models will need minor body work/paint. So far gas mileage is decent (Mid 20's town and upper 20's highway) and maintenance has been rather easy and straight forward. As for fun factor, nothing like it. It's a very unique and very fun car to drive.

The engine is one of the best parts of this car! Ive driven it for a 4 hour drive in 3rd gear often up to 100 km when I was having tranny troubles and it took it like a champ without even heating up at all! Its a poor man's high performance car! And the profile is very unique as well! A real eye opener!
