I think the Monte Carlo is a great car. I especially love the 305 engine and its sporty look.
Everything about the Monte Carlo seemed good in 1987. I mean...Aerocoupe. The very name of the popular 1987 Monte Carlo trim sounds fast. With its 305-ci HO V8 rated at 180 horsepower, the SS Aerocoupe surely did not disappoint. New for 1987, the Aerocoupe even featured aerodynamic composite headlamps, as well as a rear window slanted to reduce the drag coefficient from .375 to .365, a drop that has helped the Aerocoupe remain among the cars raced today, with 6,052 cars sold in 1987.
The base model for the 1987 Monte Carlo was no weakling either: the engine was a 262-ci V6 rated at 140 horsepower, while the 305-ci V8 was rated at 150 horses. 72,993 LS and SS cars were purchased in 1987 (not including the Aerocoupes).
The interior was surprisingly comfortable, with the bucket seats still available.

(43 reviews)This is a great car to own, IF you are doing the work yourself and are mechanically inclined. Parts are cheap and plenty, for example- Fuel pump-23 DOLLARS, Alternator 80 DOLLARS. Gas is a major factor though, observed 16 highway doing about 85mph average, at about 65mph the mpgs should come up a bit to 18 or 20 highway. Power from the stock 5.0 V8 is nothing special with 180hp, but is ok for a first time driver and is enough power to merge on the highway easier than your average hybrid or micro car. But an engine with atleast 300hp is a must to be called a performance car with its size. Handling is OK, the SS package comes with higher ratio steering box, stiffer, lower, springs, highpo shocks, bigger front swaybar and an addition of a rear swaybar. It does the job ok, but if you are not to upgrade these components with aftermarket pieces, new bushings are a must. Braking is poor, with only 10.5 inch rotors with single piston calipers up front and drums at the rear, brake fade happens easily, and even with cold brakes the car does not stop as well as any 4 wheel disc car. Retrofitting biggder discs for the front or a disc conversion for the rear is available. At the least front rotors and pads should be upgraded. Interior is great, front buckets are bolstered and confortable and rear seats arent as tortourous as say a camaro or mustang. Will fit 4 full sized adults no problem and 5 in a pinch. Legroom plenty front and rear. Storage areas in the center console and glovebox as well as a 3rd small storage area at the front of the center console. Heat works well, but A/C is not up to todays standards even with propper maitenence. Stereo is OK, but the standard 4 speaker system should be upgraded as well as maybe a 6 or 8 speaker system inegrated. Gauges and controlls are simple and easy to use with the rallypack gauges giving you oil pressure, temp, fuel, and volts. T-tops are offered and are a must for weekend drives. But on a daily driver it may want to be avoided, loud windnoise and occasional leaks are impossible to fix entirely. Exterior is classic 80s style. Few curvers and multiple cut corners. The SS wears the nascar inspired nosepiece and wing. Decals and stripes let people know that this is an SS, but the striples should be left off in most opinions today. 15x7 aluminum wheels fill the wheelwells with stock 215/65/15 tires, a 245/60/15 is reccomended for perfomance if your sticking with the stock rim size.
alittle slow for being an "SS"(at least with the stock 305). Great car if you find one without rust. for a large car it handles great altho the stock brakes are a little weak for hard driving/racing. good candidate for aftermarket parts to make an excellent driver
The 4th Generation Monte Carlo SS is fun to drive, holds all the kids with a HUGE trunk, doesn't weigh a lot (mine is 3420, most fbody cars are a few hundred pounds more). These are very underrated and a guy at Year One told me he thinks in a few years people will be wanting them as they are building more and more aftermarket parts for them! This is the kind of car to buy, modify and KEEP! My 3 year old Grandson is a little gearhead and when I am gone it will belong to him! When he gets older I will have him help me with it. It is a great car for people to learn to DIY as it isn't complicated. I am updating it with rear disc brakes and 18" wheels (but NO RUBBER band tires!) And people buy these to keep the muscle car dream alive and don't make them into a BONK! PLEASE!
I love this car. The look is very sleek. Turns heads all the time. Interior is wicked withthe black and red accent. The build is awesome for these cars the motor might have only had 180 horsepower stock but with the 3.73 gears wich made these rather quick cars. Its winter time here were Im at I parked the car for the winter and I miss it too no end of the world. 10 on the fun list after motor build and trany swap a 55 out of 10
I had the SS model, I suggest everyone should own one in their life. Whether its stock, or modified. Stock, its not a great performer, but its an excellent cruiser. Modified, and it can be a hell of a lot of fun. My SS was also the rare, Aerocoupe version, which just enhanced the beauty of the car. All in all, if i could get another one, I would in a heart beat. No matter what.
