2026 Rivian R2 Preview - summary

What’s New for the 2026 Rivian R2

The R2 is an all-new vehicle, the first to use Rivian’s new smaller SUV platform. Prior to this, the range-topping platform underpinned the R1T pickup and the R1S sport utility vehicle. A new, smaller platform will be used for this vehicle and for the upcoming Rivian R3.

Design

The Rivian R2 has the look of a scaled-down version of the R1S. It features a powered rear window that retracts into the rear liftgate, a popular and once-common SUV feature that many automakers have recently moved away from in the name of cost-cutting. The front end has the same telltale upright oval headlights that make any Rivian instantly recognizable.

Powertrain

The 2026 R2 offers three motor variants: Single-Motor RWD, Dual-Motor AWD, and Tri-Motor AWD. The latter features two motors in the rear and one in the front. Rivian has not yet announced output or range for any of these setups, but says the quickest configuration achieves 0-60 mph in under three seconds.

The R2 features Rivian’s new battery architecture, which is said to provide over 300 miles of range on a single charge. Fast charging capabilities allow the battery to go from 10 percent to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. The Rivian R2 will be compatible with both the CCS and NACS (Tesla-based) charging formats.

2026 Rivian R2 Preview - interior

Interior

The R2’s interior emphasizes ease-of-use and comfort, with plenty of rear legroom, making the rear seats suitable adults for long trips. The vehicle comes with flat-folding seats, front and rear trunks, and additional storage compartments. It also features a new steering wheel, which includes integrated haptic control dials for easy accessibility.

Technology

The Rivian R2 has a large center touchscreen that operates many of the vehicle functions, but at this time, it is not expected to come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The vehicle supports frequent software updates to continually add new features.

Safety

The 2026 R2 comes equipped with 11 cameras and five radars. It is expected to include a complete array of standard driver-assistance features, as well as some impressive autonomous driving capabilities.
