The Best New Cars at the 2023 New York Auto Show

by Matt Smith

The 2023 New York International Auto Show will be open to the public from April 7th through April 16th, running from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sundays.

Like all major auto shows, New York will host hundreds of cars from dozens of automakers, all under one roof. Auto shows are one of the only opportunities many shoppers have to see and interact with various new cars from many manufacturers in one place. In addition to being a great resource for these shoppers, the New York Auto Show also played host to a number of exciting vehicle debuts and redesigns. In addition to exciting sports cars (like the new 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse and the 2024 Nissan GT-R) and concepts (such as the Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept), these are some of the production-ready cars to look forward to at the 2023 show:

2024 Hyundai Kona

2024 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona has long been one of the most stylish options in the subcompact crossover class, but a brand new redesign makes it even more striking. The 2024 Hyundai Kona looks more streamlined, with a light bar spanning its front end and distinctive bodywork wrapping around all sides. Hyundai plans to sell the 2024 Kona with three powertrain options. A standard 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will anchor the model, while an upgrade 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will make 190 horsepower in N-Line models. Finally, Hyundai is producing a Kona Electric for the 2024 model year as well.

The new Kona’s interior also looks roomier and more visually appealing than before. Big, panoramic displays, more storage space, and better seats make this a nice place to sit in traffic.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

2024 Jeep Wrangler

As one of the most storied nameplates in America, any updates to the venerable Jeep Wrangler make us sit up and take notice. The new 2024 Jeep Wrangler has been refreshed and updated, now boasting improved safety features and an impressive new tech display. Jeep made some small improvements to the Wrangler’s exterior design, smoothing out some of the body panels and improving airflow through the seven-slot grille. The more notable changes are inside, where a refreshed dashboard and improved insulation make the biggest differences. Finally, Jeep has swapped out the old Wrangler’s tech for a new infotainment touchscreen measuring 12.3 inches. Running UConnect 5 software in addition to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the new Wrangler tech finally brings this off-roading legend into the 21st century.

2024 Kia EV9

2024 Kia EV9

We expect the all-new 2024 Kia EV9 to mark a major shift in the automotive landscape. This three-row, all-electric SUV carries much of the Kia EV6 design language, but it supersizes it for a more capable and practical option for American families. Underpinned by Kia’ proven E-GMP EV platform, the EV9 will offer both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), with an expected all-electric driving range north of 300 miles.

Seating up to seven passengers, the EV9 looks like an electric version of the Kia Telluride. If it proves to be even similarly popular, Kia will have a huge hit on its hands. And because production will take place in Georgia, the EV9 should qualify for the federal government’s EV tax credit.

2025 Ram 1500 REV

2025 Ram 1500 REV

Possibly the most impactful debut at the 2023 New York International Auto Show, the 2025 Ram 1500 REV will join the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Chevrolet Silverado EV as a full-size pickup offered by a mainstream American automaker. The REV has a classic Ram design, plus a few futuristic elements (just look at that front grille). Underneath, Ram is promising two powertrain configurations. A 168-kWh battery pack will power the standard range model across 350 electric miles. The extended-range Ram 1500 REV will use a 229-kWh battery and should deliver an electric driving range of 500 miles. Going even further, Ram claims an even longer-range model is coming.

While pricing hasn’t been announced, we’d expect top-tier models to sit above $100,000, but lower trims could cost in the $50,000 range, making this an accessible electric pickup for many shoppers.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek debuted at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show, but Subaru saved the all-new Wilderness trim for the 2023 New York show. We tested the base-engine, Premium-trim Crosstrek outside Palm Springs earlier this year, but the Wilderness trim will deliver more ground clearance, power, and plenty of other outdoors-oriented features.

Among those features are hexagonal LED foglights, plenty of copper design accents, and a ladder-style roof rack capable of holding 176 pounds of dynamic load and 700 pounds of static load. Subaru fits every Crosstrek Wilderness with its 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) and AWD system are specially tuned for improved performance in challenging terrain. Considering Subaru’s target buyer, we expect the affordable Crosstrek Wilderness to be an immediate hit.

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition

Like the Crosstrek, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport originally debuted in Chicago, but Volkswagen pulled the sheet off a special Atlas Peak Edition at this year’s New York International Auto Show. Designed to appeal to outdoorsy folk, the Peak Edition incorporates extra body cladding, lots of blacked-out trim pieces, and new wheels with all-terrain tires. Shoppers will also be pleased to see a unique interior on Peak Edition models, equipped with black leatherette upholstery boasting orange contrast stitching and light gray accents.

Volkswagen decided to move forward with the Peak Edition after its Atlas Basecamp concept vehicle (previously displayed at the 2019 NYIAS) was warmly received. These Peak Edition models will be sold with AWD as standard equipment, while other trims will be available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or AWD. A new special color, Avocado Green, will also debut with the Peak Edition.
